Forums - Sony - Publishers forced to pay fee for PSN bandwidth

Again, none of those sites guarantee 100% uptime with full insurance. I said the one we use isn't for fun and games, it's for extremely large sensiutive data which is encrypted to hell and back which needs to be delivered to a lot of people. If I recall correctly, Amazon charges around 15 cents per GB, which would keep Sony pretty competative considering this is a closed service and Sony is the only provider.

Well at least I provided some actual data, while you're only providing your words with no verifiable information. That's not very useful, I'd just like to read something which confirms what you're saying.

I am shocked at the number of folks who are steadily saying 'Stick the publisher with the cost.' Tell me again why would a dev make a demo, spend extra cash in this time of recession for what?

If I were a dev, I'd be looking at the bottom line - and if that means having to pay nada to put it on LIVE vs. paying to put it on PSN, you already know the answer.

Something tells me this gravy train for the days of free online play is about to derail.

its up to them to do it or not, not all games have demos even they ones they do like re5 got the demo on the PSN anyway.

while we are not the one playing its okay.

demos will come, we also have a FF13 Demo exclusive =).

But we have to pay for the FFXIII demo.

You Pay for the blu ray movie or the bundle, the demo is free.

Expect more exclusive content coming to Xbox Live.

So capcom paid something in the range of $300,000 to $500,000 to Sony, just to offer a free demo? wow. I think there might be some publishers, who might prefer the totally free platform with a far bigger audience...

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Well now we re starting to see SONY trying to get profits from their online service. Anyone with any common sense has been saying SONY will need revenue from PSN and now we will see them start to nickel and dime in order to help cover the losses theyve suffered.

This is kind of ridiculous and hard for publishers especially as they enter hard times as well

While there is a lot to talk about Sony's earlier (before the console was launched) understanding that they could provide this kind of services entirely free of charge, I think they won't back away from this one.

Obviously the costs of running PSN and HOME are hurting them and they are trying really hard to squeeze money. Just last year we saw the debut of Qore and the decision to charge publishers for the bandwith. However, the backlash from implementing a flat fee on users ala Live Gold would be huge. I believe they will stick to their value tactics, offering extra services (like Qore) at a cost.

$0,16 is nothing, just think 1000GB of downloaded data is only $160. Like it or not the publishers will still make demos and put DLC on PSN or it will affect the sales of thier software (it will loose potential sales).
Even M$ has a fee for Live. Whats the big deal!
I'll tell you what this crisis is so bad that no one can fork out $160 for every 1000GB of data downloaded to promote thier future title(s)! also see no one complaining about having to fork out $50 a year to kill a friend on COD which should be FREE and thats why everyone is happy with PSN!

160,000 USD for a 1GB demo with 1 million downloads.

As a publisher, would you release your demo on the one platform that is free and reaches 17 million gamers, or would you prefer the other platform that reaches about (estimated) 9 million gamers for 100,000 USD?

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

$160k is pretty cheap to get a demo downloaded 1M times.
They spend that much on a couple of commercials.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Just simply put...WOW...there have been ALOT of PS owners complianing about XBL fees, but charging the publisher is okay...because you aren't paying...right...and you think the publisher are going to continue to pay?  $160 per download...multiplied by how many times it is downloaded...duh...
