Forums - Gaming - IGN: Why DVD's better than Blu-Ray....

I don't care for Blu. It doesn't appeal to me to purchase discs which I cannot play in any of my 5 other DVD players I have scattered around.

TBH discs themselves are a PITA. I want to store all my movies on my 4 TB HDD space which is far more convenient than storing boxes everywhere.

You can align all you like but the simple plain truth is that nobody feels they need Blu Ray. They do not feel they need to pay extra for the players, they do not feel they need to pay extra for the content.

This could be said for HD content in general tbh via cable and satelite. I think it will always get a level of support but it will never get the mass market appeal that standard telly offers until it is offered as standard and the HD Telly market hits critical mass.

Fail. Nobody want to gimp up their PC for hours as they download HD movies from Itunes.

 Yes most people do...

Interesting

As long as the top quality content accounts for a significant percentage of possible storage space like it does today, digital distribution will not be a viable alternative, unless you like to hot swap hard drives all the time.

Seems that DVD is going to be the #1 format for the next 2-3 years at least...that's a LONG time for brd to find it's footing, imho...

  • You Can't Get That on Blu-ray: It's a good thing your Blu-ray players can play your DVDs.  There is no reason to buy an older movie on Blu-ray.  If the native film is of low quality, then obviously you aren't going to take advantage of Blu-ray.  I remember some dumb author complaining about the Planet of the Apes wasn't any better on Blu-ray.  Why would it be?

Actually, old movies should look much better on Blu-Ray if the studio bothers to go back and use a high-quality print. Film's quality has yet to be fully capture by any digital medium. A properly remastered Casablanca or Wizard of Oz would be mind-blowing in HD.
