The Japanese are so busy they will sleep on the street. To busy to go home.
@Kowenicki: I don't have any comparision here, but quick search from the internet resulted for wiki mentioning Japan having 175 airports and more than 23500 kilometers of railway. Yamasa institute webpage mentioned 60-90 minutes schooltrips, one way, being pretty common especially in Tokyo.
Considering that mass transport is preferred by people when population density is high, and Japan has population density more than ten times of USA or roughly 35% higher than UK or Germany. Also, Japans population is skewed towards the pacific coast and Tokyo has the worlds biggest metropolitan area of about 30 million people (in comparision to 12 million people metropolitan area of London, that happens to be known for its mass transportation, underground). So, it's very easy to believe that japanese are heavy users of public transportation, since it may be the only efficient way to move, in the areas where most of japanese people live.
