Forums - General - The Oil Drum declares 2008 to be the year of peak oil.

Just in case you weren't having enough fun with the financial crisis, here comes the Mother of All Energy Crises:

http://www.theoildrum.com/node/5177

World oil production peaked in 2008 at 81.73 million barrels/day (mbd) shown in the chart below. This oil definition includes crude oil, lease condensate, oil sands and natural gas plant liquids. If natural gas plant liquids are excluded, then the production peak remains in 2008 but at 73.79 mbd. However, if oil sands are also excluded then crude oil and lease condensate production peaked in 2005 at 72.75 mbd.

There's an imperial buttload of additional analysis and excellent commentary in the link for those interested in such matters. Interesting times. The party is coming to a close and it's time to start sobering up.

If you haven't already, I also recommend checking out Chris Martenson's Crash Course, which ties together current trends in economy and finance with energy and resource depletion. It's a valuable first step to coming to grips with the challenges our society faces in this new millenium so we can start thinking about how we can address them:

All the more reason why we need more nuclear and renewable energy.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Bring back Nuclear Fusion energy! They just need money, it's feasible damn it.

You'll get no argument from me. We should be investing in such developments heavily right now, before rising energy prices make the massive capital requirements even more expensive.

They're still working on fusion, but it's a long way off and might not turn out to be commercially viable:

I've heard it before. Peak oil is no doubt coming. But whether or not it's actually here.

Only OPEC knows... and they ain't tellin.

Energy is the least of our problems though. At least for the US. We have more then enough natural resources and such to get us through. We could drill in Alaska or have a government iniative to switch cars over to natural gas etc.

The real problem is plastic. Which is used in like everything. In the future people will look back and wonder why we wasted the building blocks of such an important matieral by putting it in our cars.
