Forums - General - Questions on today's monarchy?

What country do you live in, and who are the monarchs? What do you think about them?

I live in Australia and our monarch is Queen Elizabeth II. I think that the days of English imperialism is over and that the Queen in a remnant of the colonialism of my country. She lives so far away and has so little power beyond the symbolic (she doesn't even pick her representative here anymore) that I think the monarchy is essentially a waste of time that needs to be removed.

Do you think your monarch should have more power? Less power? Stay the same? Should it be abolished totally?

I think Australia should become a republic.

Does your monarch act as a symbol? Do you think they do a good job as a symbol?

Pretty irrelevant these days, thats not to say that Queen Elizabeth isn't respected by the public, she most certainly is. If we become a republic it will be after she dies most likely.

Canada puts Queen Elizabeth on the back of our coins. I have a feeling that once she's gone, we're not going to be putting the next guy on our coins.

that's pretty much it for Canada.

She's your Queen too you know, Queen of Canada and Queen of Australia are two of her titles.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Monarchy is vulnerable to corruption more than other form of government when the country size is large.

What country do you live in, and who are the monarchs? What do you think about them?

I live in Australia. The current monarch is Queen Elizabeth II. I think the Queen is fabulous. Her blood is a different colour, and that separates her from the rest of us.

Does you monarch have any political power? If so, how much? If so, is it an absolute monarchy?

Our Queen has little to no political power. Occasionally, she'll visit and have tea with the prime minister. He sometimes visits her too. She appoints Governor-Generals, fills in for them if they go missing and if they ask her to do so. The Governor-General is pretty much the Queen's voice around here, but he takes orders from both the Prime Minister and the Queen.

Do you think your monarch should have more power? Less power? Stay the same? Should it be abolished totally?

I think the Queen should have more power! I think that he should all link arms and lie down, forming a human carpet that the Queen may walk on when she visits, lest she dirty her feet on convict soil. I think we should reestablish the Divine Right of Kings, putting the Pope at the top and the Queen second. Furthermore, the Pope should let bygones be bygones and Lizzie shouldn't have to apologies for Henry, what with that being a Tudor thing anyway.

If your country doesn't have a monarchy do you think it should establish one?

Thank the Queen it has one!

Did your country previously have a monarchy, but not one now during your lifetime? Do you think it was a good or bad thing that it was abolished?

N/A.

Does your monarch act as a symbol? Do you think they do a good job as a symbol?

Our Queen appears on our money and does a pretty good job of that, though she's gotten a little saggy over the years. I think they recast her for more recent money. Her pre-2000s picture was much more flattering.

What do you think of monarchy as a whole?

It is good. My only complaint would be that our science maxes out at 70% :(.

Right. And being the "Queen of Canada" gets her face on our coins. That's about it. Yes, our head of state is the Queen's representative; the Governor General, but aside from a title of a figurehead and a picture on a coin(and the 20) we've really got nothing to do with her.

And like I said, I highly doubt the person after her is going to be on our coins.

England should get rid of their fake monarchy. It is just a sad b.s. tradition that serves no purpose.

What country do you live in, and who are the monarchs? What do you think about them?

United Kingdom. And I like the Queen.

Does you monarch have any political power? If so, how much?

No. It's ceremonial only, and she doesn't even use her position to support one view over another. It still has one important power, which is to suspend Parliament and (since the army technically serves the monarchy) temporarily control the country if our political system goes seriously wrong or corrupt. I don't see this power ever being exercised, but it's nice to know that there is something between us and chaos if such a disaster happened.

Do you think your monarch should have more power? Less power? Stay the same? Should it be abolished totally?

Fine where it is. I like democracy, and the advantages of a ceremonial monarch in terms of culture and tourism are significant.

Does your monarch act as a symbol? Do you think they do a good job as a symbol?

Yes. It was funny when Bush lost it in front of the Queen. And our currency and stamps are universally known for having the Queen on them.

What do you think of monarchy as a whole?(anybody could answer this one.)

Good if purely ceremonial and you already have one. I don't think starting one where none exists is a good idea since it will inevitably end in a power struggle.

Learn some world geography. The Queen is of the whole of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and indirectly of the Commonwealth realms such as Canada and Australia. England is one country within this.

Read my post above for the one major purpose of the monarchy.
