Forums - Sony - Your favorite Valkyria Chronicles mission and how you did it (Spoilers)

I can't say enough about this game. This is the third thread I've made in the past week about it. I apologize for the spam. This time there are intimate details about the plot so don't read if you haven't played the game yet.

I just finished it last night at 2am, alone in my living room, and for the first time in my life, I actually clapped in front of my tv about a game. Was I delirious? Maybe. But I can say that I was totally immersed from start to finish.

Tears fell down my face in that INFAMOUS death scene (You know what I'm talking about!) that rivals that of FF7's. When the heroine decided to sacrifice herself for her country, I was yelling at 'her' (My tv, really), "NOOOOoooo", and got teary eyed again when that aloof hero decided to realize his true feelings for her on the spot.

On to the subject of the thread. You fellas who've played the game, which was your favorite mission?

Mine would be 'the battle of barious' (chapter 7), where you had to take on Maximillian's huge tank along with the invincible Valkyria. it took me 9 tries, but when I was finally able to do it, I felt an extreme satisfaction at downing that hulk of a machine, without having to level up on the side, and I did it with A rank too! Here's how I did it, in summary:

-had four lancers, one scout, one shocktrooper, and two engineers.

-sent the Edelweiss far away to the southeastern camp as fast as possible. I didn't use it to fight at all because after many tries, I found that my main problem was the fact that the thing is far too bulky to fit with the huge tank in the same battlefield, and I found my radiator exposed to anti-tank fire too many times.

-sent the scout to the second camp to defend it, because I found that reinforcements were the prime reason why my lancers had the most difficulty getting in position to shoot.

-had the shocktrooper defend the south trench because I realized that all of their troops took that route and wasted my lancers there.

-destroyed the gun turrets as fast as possible, and cut down all three radiators' hp to one shot left to kill the first time the tank exposes them. I found that the radiators retain the hp they have left. This was critical because when Selvaria comes along, you have fewer chances to shoot the radiators safely, so the ability to destroy the things with one shot when she's there saves a lot of hp.

-evacuated everyone after destroying the first radiator except for two lancers and an engineer, whom I hid in the south border of the map behind some walls, and waited there for the tank to expose the radiators. Selvaria wasn't a factor at all anymore because she had no one left to shoot. As mentioned, all of their troops take the south trench behind the big tank. In essence, I used the enemy tank as cover while I shot the thing from the other side.

-after all the radiators were gone, I just shot the thing to death with the two lancers from far away.

Voila, A rank! :D

Actually, I wouldn't be able to call just one mission as the best as I enjoyed them all ^^ I am now on my trip through the game to get all my A ranks, so far so good (5th level).

About your mission: I didn't see the trouble with it :-/

I used two lancers, an engineer, shocktrooper and a scout.

The two lancers pummeled away from the start, while the scout and the shocktrooper went to the ditch just past the ramp in the middle of the level. When reinforcements arrived, those two took out everyone (aside from Selvaria) without even having to use my own turns. Then I summoned new people from the other camp and lanced that tank to death. Only played the mission once and passed it without a problem >_>

One of my better moves was when I had to stop the tank in the town when the princess gets kidnapped. I managed to position a shocktrooper behind the tank, without getting shot to bits, while two other shocktroopers went on ahead to clear any possible incoming reinforcements. Then I used up pretty much all my shields to get another shocktrooper in line with the earlier one, making sure I could double-team the tank, taking it out incredibly fast.

And the mission (optional) where you have to defend the refugee camp was the most difficult one imho. That required some "move in, take out, make sure you're back at the base camp to take out incoming attackers and out of harm's way of tank shells and sniper fire at the same time"-tactics

yeah that defend the refugee camp made my head squirm. i'm currently working on a 5 turn formula on that one, but so far i can't seem to get it through largo's thick head to hit the bloody treads on cue...

a lot of people (me included) had a lot of trouble with chapter 7 coz of:

1.) the shock of the immensity of the operation, as prior to this the battles have been 'normal'
2.) the number of things that have to go right necessarily
3.) the many unknown things that are part of the mission
4.) the sheer inability of troops at that point of progression to hit with precision, coz people like me never bothered to level up characters outside of normal story progression.

so when i finally did it (still without levelling up my troops), it was immensely satisfying. especially since i got the A rank on it too :)

That refugee camp thingy is actually quite easy to get A rank on, as long as you get lucky (as I was) with one particular enemy. Besides, why shoot the threads? Just go for the "defend unit"-order and send Largo to the back of the tank and defeat it with one blast?

erm, hmm.

i never thought of that.. probably coz there are so many of em to start with?

when I FINALLY beat Lelouch's...err...I mean Maximilian's GODDAMN Tank... jeez... that mission was ungodly difficult.... I wanted to pull my hair out.

bugrimmar, if you like the game so much, why don't you get a VC sig :P

coz everyone has one :P

i express my love in a different way

yeah, and Outlawauron is a BIGGER VC fan that me.

Selvaria's Last Stand
Grab 4 snipers and equipe them with their best weapons, at the begining of the stage use the Edelsweiss to launch a smoke bomb in your zone.
After that grab one of your sniper and try to shoot Selvaria on the head. (you can see her shilouette trought the smoke) After 4 shoots she's done, but remember use one different sniper every time. (don't use the same sniper twice)

If you don't have strong weapons use your 5 snipers.
