Honourable/Special Mention - Many people forget that Ghost recon: Advanced Warfighter was the first real HD shooter, Universally acclaimed and the only game to have received a 9.9 from Gametrailers. Which is quite an achievement considering the stellar of shooter released. I recommend you check out Far cry 2 really amazing game! The most anticipated shooter 'Call of duty Modern Warfare 2 is expected to be released this November, which should give killzone 2 a run for it's money. The Wanted 'videogame' is coming soon. Where is the game that brought multiplayer online gameplay to the masses, Unreal Tournament?
Gears added nothing to the genre, same with Resistance, R6:Vegas doesnt belong, COD4 doesnt belong, Killzone doesnt belong.
where is Quake, Wolfenstein, Tribes, and the other games that actually evolved the genre and made it what it is today? You literally only have 3 games there that shaped the genre in some form or another which are Halo, Half-Life and Golden Eye.
You tried with this post but I missed WAY to much to consider yourself a true shooter fan.
Maybe. But no Doom, Perfect Dark, Quake, Counter Strike, Half Life 1, Timesplitters 2, Wolfenstein, etc.
Also shooters is a very broad genre. It also includes arcade shooters, shootem ups, and side scroller shooters. So House of the Dead, Duck Hunt, Space Invaders, etc.
For such praise of the genre I see very little knowledge of the greatest ones in it. New age definition I presume of the shooter genre which is why so much is forgotten.
It's a great genre but I think it still competes with RPGs, platformers, and Strategies for the most celebrated.
The N64 generation of shooters would have to be the best. I mean Goldeneye and Perfect Dark? How could anything else compete. If Perfect Dark had online multiplayer it would be the most amazing thing in the world. If Microsoft could release Goldeneye HD like they wanted I would by a 360 just for that!!

Call of duty 4....what an absolute beast of a game

Oh, I definitely agree that Resistance 2 has the best co-op on any console. It's pretty intense!
I haven't spent much time with Killzone 2 online, but it's definitely good. I'd say my favorite is still Warhawk though.
Shooting games are great with a doubt but they are not the best genre in gaming. I think Call Of Duty 4 is one of the best shooting games I ever played. The sequel to Call Of Duty 4 modern wafare will be awesome.

WoW lots of new First person shooters fans here, I've been playing FPS since the first Quake back in 1996, one of my favorite FPS is Half life 2 and I was extremely addicted to Halo 2 multiplayer
