The difference is the PS3 will never get that year back. Both being next generation systems... the next generation will appear at the same time for them.
The real question is how many years will the PSP last before it's replaced and will it last longer then the Wii in terms of total years on the market.
If the PSP2 comes out within the next couple years the Wii should definitly do it. The only way it shouldn't would be if the PSP has a longer lifespan as the "Main" sony handheld.
Even then the Wii has a good chance to leg it out.

Handhelds really tend to sell much more than the consoles. The trend is usually one handheld per gamer and one console per household (with several gamers). Given this, it will be hard for the Wii to outsell the PSP.
Give it time. I say it will surpass Ps2 in Japan sales by the end of 2009 then sell 30 million in japan life time.
