Zim said: scotland yard I still like turn based rpgs simply because I enjoy them from time to time. While rpgs like the tales series are great and the combat in them is really good it's still nice to have a turn based system.
I've always been a big fan of turn based games though, Heroes of Might and Magic is one of my favourite game series. Im still great and fast paced real time games but it's just nice to have a turn based game time from time.
You only need to look at DQ9 to see that turn based is definetly a preferred style fo some gamers. They changed the system from real time to turn based because of fan outcry. |
I suppose this is actually pretty similar to what I feel. Playing through the demo of Eternal Sonata, I've been very excited about how they've diverged from a more traditional combat system. But there are some games that have taken turn-based combat and made enough changes to it that it captures your interest again -- I remember playing Shadow Hearts and being pleasantly surprised by how interactive that 'Wheel of Judgement' system was. It breathed a new sort of life into turn-based combat, and I felt like I had a lot of control over how every battle would turn out.
From what I'm reading, Lost Odyssey looks like it's going to offer the same sort of turn-based combat with some real-time elements to it. It'll be interesting to see how it ends up playing -- I'll pick it up whether it turns out to be innovative or not, just because I find the art and the story so compelling at this point that I'm confident I'll enjoy it regardless of what they end up doing with the combat.
