I believe it is based on speed, the conditions placed on you based on tarot cards, and whether you attack the shadow from behind or not.

 Oh, that's the biggest thing I miss from P3. I knew how to get preemptives, and the bow made it a piece of cake! Bring that part of P3 into P4, and I'll blow through the enemies. But in 4, I know I've struck the backside of an enemy to get a normal fight, some I would barely hit gave me an advantage, and a few where we struck head-on, the enemy had the advantage, so... I'm at a loss for how to describe it.

I think that they're very close in terms of quality, and both are fantastic. P4 may be better, but P3 left a bigger impression on me.
