I posted in XLost's thread about which version I prefer. I will tell you about a few instances involving devs/PR firms/publishers.
When I request games to review, I tend to ask for the 360 version first, and list the PS3 next and then the Wii. Ubi oftentimes sends all three versions of games (sometimes they'll ship the DS version too). Anyhow, most times, companies will send me the 360 version of the game. I am comfortable with the controller, I enjoy LIVE way more than PSN and enjoy chatting/texting/harrassing folks on LIVE.
However, there were quite a few instances where I did request the 360 version of a game and I was told the 360 version was out, but I could get the PS3 version, which is always in stock. I thought that was an isolated incident at first, but oftentimes, instead of being shocked when I open a mailer and see - you guessed it - the PS3 version of a game. I am grateful, but it really makes things harder on my end.
I met the creator of Guitar Hero and told him I wanted to review World Tour. So he gave me the name of one of the firms handling it. I e-mailed the firm and they were like 'No worries - got you down for the 360 version.' However, a mixup happened - last year, it was Rock Band being sent out the second week it was out - opps - and the PR firm was like 'Man, there was a mistake. We'll get more 360 versions of GHWT in, but it won't be in a while. I can, however, ship you the PS3 version out today. We have plenty ready to ship.' Within 2 days, UPS dropped it off.
Another instance was when Capcom sent me SFIV. I asked for both versions of DMC4, but they said 360 stock was low, so I just asked for that version. With SFIV, they sent me the PS3 version, even though I had requested the 360 version and it was confirmed. I was planning to swap it with someone that had the 360 version, but Capcom caught the error and shipped me the 360 version.
Then, Mad Catz put me down to get a tourney fight stick - and told me it would be a while before the 360 version would be back in stock - but the rep said he could send the PS3 version out asap - and said they had plenty available.
My question is - why? If you know you are going to have several requests for one console version, why not make more of that one and less of the other? I think they will end up shipping the leftovers to retail and sell thoses.
Not trying to flame, but just an interesting observation.
