im an atheist and i think if people want to believe they should do so in private, forcing religion on people is something i strongly object to, nor should i have to listen to there beliefs when im at school, work, hospital or any other public place.

You think people should be barred from expressing their religious views in public?

depends what you mean by "express"

i think that he means trying to go out and covert people and handing out bibles at school and stuff like that

thats what i object to, and in the case of the UK, add "faith" schools to that list

its part of freedom of speech. If you object to that, then you must also object to political practices and/or commercial practices that "express" themselves in the same fashion.

If you are truly not interested, just say "no." And most companies have "do not call" or "opt out" lists, much in the same fashion as the donotcall.gov website where you can just be excluded from being "expressed" to.

how is objecting to people going to schools and trying to convert children an attack of freedom of speech? its actually a defence of it, thoose children in "faith" schools generally get a very unbalanced education when it comes to religion and the same "faith" is forced on them in assemblys and stuff, we dont have Liberal Democrat, Labour or Conservative schools, so why the hell should we have "Faith" schools, im defending freedom, not eroding it

because "faith" schools are private.

If I wanted to start That Guy's Right Wing School of No Spin, then I could totally do it, just as long as its private.

I don't agree with federal money going towards faith based schools, but if a school wants to be "faith based," it can do pretty much whatever it wants just so long as its accredited and that the parents foot the bill for it.

The parents still have the right to indoctrinate their kids with whatever they want; and if they want to pay someone to teach them religion in a private faith based school, then they have the right to do so.

If the school is accredited, then I believe that the school should have to pay taxes just like any other private institution.

If the school is NOT accredited (i.e. meaning you can get a diploma that counts, etc. etc.), then the school can pretty much do whatever it wants; but that means the kid would still have to go to regular public school and the faith based school would have to operate in addition to mandatory public schooling.

ok, i should clarify, im from the UK, here we have many state "faith" schools, thats what i have the most objection to

oh well then I'm with you there 100%.

But I'm for people expressing themselves in public whether it be campaigning for some candidate, cause, or religion; just as long as its peaceful.

I don't need it personally and I don't care if others practice it, as long as it's not imposed upon me.

Ironically the same constitutional protection that the Supreme Court uses to uphold a person's right to choose whether to send their kid to public or private school, to choose what religion they teach their kid, and to use or not use contraception is the right they use to protect a woman's right to have an abortion.

People love to malign that right to privacy stuff until you suggest that the government take away any of those other rights to privacy.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I only like religions that require members to do social works -a tithe is a tithe or GTFO.

I'm a muslim, or like what makingmusic said, I am practicing Islam.
I think religion can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how it is uses. Ex: Using it to make the world place by entering community service, or using it to kill people.

This describes me as well.

I personally think that all religions basically boil down to similar ideas. Be nice, be helpful, be fair.......basically be a good person. I think everybody here is on board with that sentiment.......right?

I like religion. It's cool and stuff.

I just don't see much reason for organized religion anymore.

It made sense... what back in the day. If Jesus, Moses, Zoroaster or whatever had something to say.

Well shoot most people couldn't read... and even if they could there wouldn't be enough holy books to pass around.

Now adays we're swamped with information... anyone can read etc...

I dont' believe anyone can really interpret something better then someone else at this point... orginzation just leads to some humans being placed ahead of others and that is just going to lead to trouble religion wise more often then not.

I'm into politics. Just not organized politics. lol, you can do a "find and replace" and change out every time the word "religion" is mentioned with "politics" and it would make perfect sense still.

I'm cool with politics just as long as no one imposes their beliefs upon me ^_^
