Forums - Sales - 7th gen is a huge wake-up call to Sony

@OP

So what's "new" or what's the insight in this thread?

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

@OP

I totally agree with the article.
A complete reversal.

Everyone that talks about the price forgets that it was impossible to predict that the whole worlds economy would collapse like it did when the PS3 was launched let alone the years leading up to it as the decisions were being made in it's development stage. Even at it's high price tag it's managed to put up a fight selling more consoles faster than the 360. In hingsight it was the wrong decision but at the time it was very much a good decision. Had the world's economy stayed as it was the PS3 would be doing much better. I doubt it would have beaten the Wii but it would have been a bit closer.

When do you think the PS3 launched and when do you think the economy went to hell?  I assure you, the economy had nothing to do with the first 2 1/2 years of the PS3's life, people just didn't want to spend $600 on a toy.

Unfortunately, this it too much of a blanket statement.  The PS3 was outselling the 360 for quite a period from the start of the 2007 Christmas shopping season until the 360 pricedrop this past fall.  Also during the entirely of its lifetime, the PS3 wasn't always $600.  So to say "people just didn't want to spend $600 on a toy" has a lot of truth.  But the bigger picture here is that during "the first 2 1/2 years of the PS3's life," the PS3 wasn't always $600.  It's a combination of both the economy and competitive pricing is what stopped PS3 WW sales from exceeding 360 sales.  But for a third place console, there is still a healthy demand for the system.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Sony's starting to see their weaknesses though and you can ese their efforts to redeem themselves in Japan with their recent release schedule. It willtake time, but sony should be getting back on track soon.

Sony clearly have been beaten by Wii this generation. Wii is outselling PS3 by more double this generation. PS3 is selling on par with X360. Sony took the consumers and its competitors for granted and are now paying the ultimate price with a drop in market share and huge losses on PS3.

PS3 still struggles to sell systems two years after its launch and it is over priced. PS3 needs to start selling more systems. It may sell more software and gain back a little market share. Until then eat humble pie Sony.

Wii will triple the PS3 install base when the console generation is over and done. Later on in a console generation exclusives mean nothing and the losing console becomes a bigger loser. History repeats itself but this time the market has been  reversed. Nintendo are now on top, Sony are on the bottom. MS remains in second place.

BTW: PS3 will never be a PS2 or even a PS1. 50 million console sales ltd is all PS3 will sell this generation. PS3 will never even overtake X360.

Anyway please provide your views/ feedback on the topic.

PS3 has sold more than X360 if you compare them in the same period of time...

Wii... well.. Maybe in 2 years we will see the new console of Nintendo so Wii won't live much more.

With Microsoft will be the same.. maybe in 2011 we will see X720.

But Sony will support PS3 while PS4 is in the market.

Maybe we'll see PS4 in 2012/2013 but PS3 will still selling and Sony will give it support... so you are totally wrong.

If Microsoft and Nintendo do the same that in the last generation Sony will overtake both.

That's my opinion.

these threads are getting tiresome.

A remix to an old song.

I buy consoles for their games... not the other way around.

Apple can do it, Sony can't. Apple also sells a crap ton of $3000 laptops. Sony can't. Apple is special that way.

As a 16 year Apple user, you are wrong.  If you only knew the state Apple was in before Apple bought out Next and Gil Amelio brought back Jobs on board.  It had gotten to the point to where Apple went from the number one computer company in the early 1990's to having to put themselves up for sale, having Mac clones eating into their hardware marketshare, and then begging Microsoft for a bailout.  I certainly do not know the future of SONY, but YOU have no idea what you are talking about.
