you can see that the hardware sits at ~27m for X360 and ~19.2m for PS3. Considering the yearly total (below) the X360 would need an additional 2m sold YoY, and the PS3 would need an aditional 0.5m YoY.

Currently, the X360 is doing better than last year. However, I don't think the X360 will do an additional 2m extra, so I feel fairly confident in saying it won't.

The PS3 is doing slightly worse (200k worse), so it just needs to pick up ~700k units. This could go either way, but I'm leaning towards just shy (talking 100k's) as it did very poorly over the christmas period.

Good numbers here, but according to VGChartz numbers on front page, PS3 needs 9Mil to hit 30 and 360 needs 11Mil to hit 40, right?

Maybe I'm confused...

It looks like unless they both underperform against the '08 numbers you listed here, they would both make it.  Given the numbers last year at this time, 360 is tracking ahead, and PS3 behind.  Did I miss something?

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

with people worrying about economic hardships, seeing another 10 million systems being sold is going to be a bit of a stretch.

On topic I think they hinder each other so the two can't happen together. Either the 360 hits 40mil or the PS3 hits 30mil.

 

It is right.  This article bases these number from the corporate filing (100% accurate for shipped units for 2008).  From that article:

"The PlayStation 3 shipped around 10.77 million and the Xbox 360 also shipped 10.8 million: a dead heat. As for life-time sales, the Xbox 360 is at 28.45 million and the PlayStation 3 at 21.35 million - a slightly tighter gap than Microsoft's announced 8 million."

What's 21.35 million divided by 2?  Isn't that around 10.5 million per calendar year?  The article was published Jan. 29, 2009.

360 40 Million with awesome new IPs, a lot more casual stuff, more hit arcade games and new additions to the Xbox LIVE service.

PS3 30 Million with price cut, new IPs, more casual stuff, A LOT MORE PSN stuff and A LOT MORE PSN features.
