Forums - Gaming - Will there ever be a JRPG as well known as FF7? A FF7-Killer, if you may.

pokemon its quite limited to be considered a full blown jrpg, even if my time i bougt yellow gold and silver.
but pales in comparison to how awesome FF is or even FF7.

Are you seriously going to make the "Pokemon doesn't count because it's not a JRPG because it's too simple" argument

Really?

In my country, there are rarely any people that know Final Fantasy, let alone VII. I haven't met a person that doesn't know Pokemons.

In mhy country the games where known only after the anime series boom, so I think each one helps each other(anime series/games).

Anyway, there is more quality in FF7 than there is even in the new pokemon, impact isnt about just sales, its sales and quality(and more things).

I disagree Khuutra. The way I see it Pokemon is only well known to its specific audience. It hasnt made an impact on the industry as big as FFVII has.

The continued popularity of the animated series would disagree with you - as well as the size of its audience at the height of its power, and the fact that its audience is still large enough to break 20 million units sold every generation.

The question isn't even about "impact", though the collecting-and-controlling-of monsters impact of Pokemon is difficult to overstate, since it ended up having a lot to do with the eventual success of Yu-Gi-Oh and what have you. It's about being well known. For years, everyone in the United States and Japan knew what Pokemon was - I odn't know how it was in Europe, but once you go beyond the very narrow demograhic of the Internet Gamer Nerd, Pokemon is literally incomparable in its genre.

What kind of impact has Pokemon made on the industry and the genre? aside from being phenomenally popular itself? The concept of collecting monsters has been used in RPGs before, and I dont see a lot of games inspired by Pokemon.

FFVII on the other hand has introduced cinematic way to tell a story and arguably brought the genre to 3d. But more importantly - it has brought the attention of masses to the whole genre and made it mainstream. Even today's RPGs are in many ways inspired by FFVII. It has really done something bigger than just "sold a lot"

I think he meant pokemon games where bad compared to the level of production that FF games have, which I agree.

Both of those were around prior to FFVII.

As for pokemon's effect... I wonder if Tales of Symphonia 2 would have had monster catching if Pokemon had never existed.

I am not going to argue impact with you, as the both of us lack enough knowledge to make an educated argument on that front.

The question is about whether or not a JRPG will ever be better-known than FF7. The answer is clearly yes, as Pokemon has been better known for over a decade.

u could it in many final fantasy but "tame" them.

also those things were implented in final fantasies before the 6th, which were released before pokemon.

also FF7 was already a complex JRPG when pokemon came by in the same year.

In what Final Fantasy did you collect monster? Getting the Imp call in Final Fantasy IV doesn't really count as monster collecting by the way.
