I disagree Khuutra. The way I see it Pokemon is only well known to its specific audience. It hasnt made an impact on the industry as big as FFVII has.

The continued popularity of the animated series would disagree with you - as well as the size of its audience at the height of its power, and the fact that its audience is still large enough to break 20 million units sold every generation.

The question isn't even about "impact", though the collecting-and-controlling-of monsters impact of Pokemon is difficult to overstate, since it ended up having a lot to do with the eventual success of Yu-Gi-Oh and what have you. It's about being well known. For years, everyone in the United States and Japan knew what Pokemon was - I odn't know how it was in Europe, but once you go beyond the very narrow demograhic of the Internet Gamer Nerd, Pokemon is literally incomparable in its genre.

What kind of impact has Pokemon made on the industry and the genre? aside from being phenomenally popular itself? The concept of collecting monsters has been used in RPGs before, and I dont see a lot of games inspired by Pokemon.

FFVII on the other hand has introduced cinematic way to tell a story and arguably brought the genre to 3d. But more importantly - it has brought the attention of masses to the whole genre and made it mainstream. Even today's RPGs are in many ways inspired by FFVII. It has really done something bigger than just "sold a lot"

Both of those were around prior to FFVII.

As for pokemon's effect... I wonder if Tales of Symphonia 2 would have had monster catching if Pokemon had never existed.

u could it in many final fantasy but "tame" them.

also those things were implented in final fantasies before the 6th, which were released before pokemon.

also FF7 was already a complex JRPG when pokemon came by in the same year.

Dragon quest monsters was more similar to what is pokemon, not sure which came out first.
