Forums - Sales - Nintendo raises Wii price in the UK

Lock if already posted!

Nintendo claims it has been forced to raise the UK trade price of the Wii by £20.

Nintendo has today announced that it will be raising the trade price of the Wii in the UK by £18 - £20 GBP because of the continued devaluation of the Pound Sterling in the global economy.

The trade price, which is the one charged to retailers, not customers, hasn't been fully disclosed in the announcement but it does seem like the RRP for customers will stay at £179.99.

The worry is however that, if trade price raises but the RRP doesn't, then the already low margins suffered by retailers on game consoles will be further diminished. Traditionally consoles have made profit from game sales, not the actual hardware; like shaving razors the profit comes from selling the blades, not the handles.

"Due to the severe and continuing depreciation of the pound, we are, unfortunately, having to raise our trade price to UK retailers of Wii hardware," Nintendo said to GI.biz. "The price that they then offer to consumers is, of course, up to the retailers."

Naturally, if margins for retailers fall too low then shops may choose to up the cost of the consoles, or the games, in order to increase profits.

"We are only – reluctantly – raising our trade price now to retailers due to unprecedented and sustained depreciation of the pound. This is a problem brought about by extreme currency fluctuations that are a symptom of the global economic situation," said Nintendo.

The pound is doing worse than I thought, maybe it's time to switch to the euro?
Anyway, I don't think this will influence the Wii sales that much.

it already is but i cant lock sorry

lol they should have raised the Wii price 2 years ago, it would have sold the same (since it was supply constrained so retailers were bundling it with crap for 350 dollars and ebay was asking just as much) and they'd have a lot more money now.

It's funny that the 360 is desperately cutting prices to below Wii levels while the Wii can raise prices and will almost certainly still be the number one system in Britain. The way its looking a 200 pound Wii would outsell the 360 even if the 360 was cut down to game cube levels (50 pounds or so)

Apart from the very very end of it's life (clearing stock) the Cube never had an RRP so low.... I think it was £80 at the lowest.

Really?  It went to 99 dollars pretty early (before it was really dead) here in the states.  I figured it would translate, but I guess they kept the price higher in Europe still.

I remember the Cube dropping to 100 euros, I saw it on TV. It'd be strange if they didn't drop the price in the UK.

Isn't (wasn't) 100 Euros about the same as £80?

Also the drop to $99 was supposedly in September 2003 (if Wiki is to be believed) which is 2 years after launch.... I can't find a solid price history though. Especially not regional.
