Forums - Gaming - Women Portrayal in gaming

Maybe all those women like the big rippling muscles of those macho male characters like Marcus Fenix?

No we don't. And Montana is right I think most of us female gamer don't mind Ivy getting a skimpier swimsuit with every new Soulcalibur iteration partly because woman's body has been used for ages as a selling point. We deplore it but we also know that games are primarly made for young adult males. On the other hand, I feel a lot more resentment for the girls participating in degrading TV shows like "Battle of the bods" it's because of debrained like these sexism won't be erradicated anytime soon.

One word , Yuna .

Four words: Rikku had no clothes.

I thought Rikku was a little boy !! its hard to tell difference between the males and female with SE characters.

you must be confusing Rikku with Riku xD

YES !? Rikku the Al-Bhed . thanks for the correction

@badgenome

she was almost naked wasnt she ?!?!?

Joanna from Perfect Dark was a good one, till she got turned into an american bimbo.

As for revealing fem chars, I don't really have anything against them except the fact that sometimes they're just so boring.

The BB corps from MGS4 are probably my favs - I can't really think of any other female chars with an interesting design. I also think Tira from SC4 is alright.

They were pretty skimpy, though. And by FFX-2, they were barely there at all.

you dont watch tv or films much if you think women (and men) arent constantly objectified constantly on them, vidoegames are just as bad as every media format when it comes to this

Well I have to say video games is one of the few media where you get to see some nice looking men (looking at Kaim for example from Lost Odyssey) I do wish however that there would be more strong female characters that aren't sex objects or damsels in distress.

Though I guess pixels don't bother me as much... Maybe that's why you don't see that many female gamers complain about it.

However, I hate how REAL women are treated like sex objects (example IGN "babes", that title is insulting already but the way they portray them is even more... plus those women are idiots) but that's another subject. =_=

What about the portrayal of men? This whole topic is sexist.

Whatever, I'll just inject myself with some steroids, then I'll be just like those dudes in the video games.

I think the portrayal of women in video games has made considerable progress, but it's not a unified progress. Much has to do with the fact that portrayal of characters in videogames has made a significant progress, so much more can is done with characters now than 10 years ago. There is a huge gap between the sexes, with males being given much more attention and females given skimpier outfits, but we also see some games that really take equality as an issue.

Take Half-Life 2 for instance. Sure, the cast is 5 males (since Episode 2) and 2 females, but Alyx can almost count for 2 for the amount of attention that is paid to her. The resistance also features males and females fighting side by side, a not very common sight. The girls in HL2 are not given any more or any less weight than the guys. A very equal game.

Another game that pops into my mind features an all female cast; Portal. Granted, there are only 2 real characters in Portal. Glados and Chell. While Chell is just a shell character for the player to fill, GlaDOS is one complex girl, with no skimpy outfits or sexual behaviour. Oh, and the gunturrets are ladies too. Imagine that.

I believe that the gaming industry will be male-centered for a very long time. It's not going to change very quickly. But as long as quality studios such as Valve at least consider the equality issue, we'll be seeing many quality games with at least somewhat equal females. And I believe that that will lead to better games and more gamers.

I also belive that as long as the gaming industry is primarily focused on males, and girls are not the ones making the games, we'll be surrounded by sluts in skimpy outfits. Which some may find to be a good thing.

I've been playing Halo Wars recently....
I don't think Prof. Anders was a negative portrayal as of so far.
