In his defense, he never claimed to have new ideas. His 70s brilliance (which it was, I dare you to challenge that) was to recreate old ideas and present them to a modern audience.
Unfortunately, he lost that sometime in between Empire and Jedi (though I think Speilberg saved him by making The Last Crusade a complete not piece of shit).
Lucas was a visionary, though not in the "new idea" sense. He recreated stories, though it can be argued it went for the worse (though there were many factors, transitioning of studio heads, 70s crisis, etc) after he started it.
Either way, you can't watch THX, American Graffiti, and the unaltered Star Wars (and even Empire, for that matter) without a sense of awe. The man is/was immensely talented. *cue SickBoy Trainspotting rant about "losing it" here*
