both Zelda games on NES just were not that great IMO,Crystalis on NES and Startropics are far better games of that genre. Don't think Zelda truly hit stride til SNES then the 3D games.

Though personally my fave Zelda is Windwaker and Zelda DX.

You like crystalis and startropics?  Man those were two awesome games! I didn't know any one else knew they existed.  I loved the yo-yo weapons in startropics and that dolphin.  But I can't believe you like windwaker the best...boo

Startropic is available on VC if you want to recapture the joy of the game. I also thought I was the only one who loved Crystalis, that game was really great.

OT: Zelda II was my first Zelda game (I remember being wowed by the golden cartridge!). It took a really long time for me to beat (factoring the diffculty and the fact that I didn't speak English when I was 8-9) but I remember beating many times. Just for fun I would level my sword to the max in the first palace by killing the floating skulls over and over again for 50 exp.

I would run ahead and get the hammer before getting the candle (i know, insane) then I would go and get downthrust. I would then just hop on top of the skulls so I could just hold the down button instead of having to stab repeatedly.

I'm not that good any more

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Crystalis (NES) was a great game.  I think I still have an old notebook somewhere with maps of its areas (which I made to avoid getting lost).  The items in Crystalis are arguably better than those of several Zelda games.

Startropics was good too and it added jumping to the mix.

What's with all this 1988 love in this thread and the SMB2 thread?

Had a change of heart, Sharky?

I also loved Crystalis. Most people I know that played it did, but very few have played it. I liked Startropics but I bought it a couple weeks ago for VC, and the controls... aren't good.

OT: Zelda II is a good game, I like it but it is damned hard.... Without cheating I can(could) get to the miniboss before Shadow Link... but I couldn't beat him. I never did beat that game... maybe I should.... *rummages for old cart...*

I always try that. I fail at it soo hard. I like to save the castle endings for the last few levels. If you put the crystal in its place, you get an automatic level up. Works well for the last sword/HP/MP stuff. Yeah sword is the most important part. You know I never did beat the game. Thats why I am playing now. I got to the fake link while emulating it once, and the rom was messed up :[

you can buy it on VC? I don't own a wii, although my parents do, haha. I have the original cartridge of both crystilis and star tropics, but considering that they are putting some of these classics on VC means I will have to check it out when I go back home.

Fact: Earthbound is the greatest game ever made

Yeah the Guardian Angel (don't know if that's his real name but that's what we called him) was a real bitch to kill. You had to use all your magic just to start the fight : Thunder, Jump, Shield.

@nordlead : I never thought of that. Killing those skulls took sooooo long at Sword level 1.

I believe this is the best zelda game ever. It is clearly the best game Nintendo has ever made. Who agrees with me?

Its a terrible game.

sorry zelda 2 was the weakest i think that Majora's Mask was the best

It wasn't the worst Zelda Imo but it was one of the hardest and that is a good thing. I really also enjoyed the music in the game.
