Forums - Gaming - What is with the hostility of PC gamers towards console gamers?

Console gamers will do the same. It's just dumb, because they both have their strenghts and weakneses.

The "I like to use my xx inch TV to play games" argument is odd, as you can hook your towers up to your tv.

The hostility definitely goes both ways. Your opening post is in a tone which implies console supporters are gems of impartiality, and free of bias.  This is certainly not true, especially when you see someone say gaming rigs cost incredible amounts of money and must be upgraded constantly.

Don't you know that if you sit too close to your TV you get square eyes?

Of course. Why would you sit close to your tv?

lol get prepared for a shit storm from the pc fanboys *cough*shio*cough* ;)

On topic, I honestly think its because they feel betrayed by the industry in a sense. Just a few years ago they were king of the gaming world with every high profile 'hardcore' game always debuting on the pc first. Fast forward a few years later and it seems like the focus of a lot of the bigger developers has shifted towards the consoles. I personally know of a pro UT gamer that can't stand UT3 because he says it was made with consoles in mind first and pc's second. Not sure what he means by that since I never played the game but I'm guessing they watered down the gameplay to allow for a more casual friendly aproach.

It also shows why pc gamers usually have such a high hatred of Halo. It started the entire shift that made consoles the home of shooters. And yes consoles have now surpassed pc's in the shooter realm. Halo 3, Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and The Conduit are all a testament to that fact.

I think it is something along the lines of this.  The story plays out this way:

1. Hardcore PC gamer drops over $1000 on their PC.

2. They tweak, pop, peak, and optimize their rigs to play real well.

3. They pump up the resolution real high and are boastful about that.

4. They find the masses could care less about this and just want to play games.  They are also wondering how in the heck they want to do this, AND will pay extra?  Don't the masses know if they just dedicate themselves to the PC, they can have a superior game experience FOR LESS MONEY PER GAME?  Nevermind the fact that the Wii can't even come close to their horsepower, but they are happy with it.

5. They are resentful that console gamings have a lot of attention, and sell better, and are what people care about.

6. There is also the reality that the console versions of the same games usually sell better.

here is the hole in that, console games need to sell way more to make the same revenue for publishers so while they can make more than PC they have to sell way more than the PC version to accomplish this.

This is why most HD console games are multiplat now.

Outside of licensing fees, why MUST a console version of a game sell more  than a PC version of the same title?  I remember reading how game designers make at least 4 times the revenue releasing a game on a console then the do on the PC.  A large part of it has to do with piracy.

Stealing mah games and then dumbing down them. Console games are way too simplificated to be enjoyable for me anyways. Games have been going down hill since XBox entered the market. Hell, they get even simpler all the time. See Nintendo, thats your inevitable future. ;)

So big thanks for console players for supporting end of hardcore games!

(I am not alone btw,

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Weekend-Bashing-New-Games-Are-for-Dumb-Gamers-88468.shtml

Games are not getting any better as we might expect, but people are getting dumber (and by dumb I mean that lampposts would win in spelling competitions). Dumb may be too tough. Games today are no longer intellectually challenging and, I'm sure, most people have noticed that more and more potential buyers are attracted by graphics, rather than gameplay.

etc. , try

Higher replication costs, more advertising, and the like. PC games or at least the PC versions of a game typically never see a single advertisement.

Also piracy isnt as bad as publishers whine about. Look at The Witcher for example. Zero DRM or any real anti-piracy measures. Sold over a million. Valve games always sell better on PC, they have DRM but Valve adds value to it making it so that there is no reason to pirate a game. EA might complain but realistically Spore was the highest selling PC game for nearly a month worldwide pulling over a million sales.

My guess is hardcore PC games are built with robust multilayer and replay options that have games develop cult followings while console games are usually more focused on other areas. Some PC games can be played for years. Console gamers tend to want a new game every month and PC/console games don't usually get developed in mind to have the lasting appeal for PC.

Example for me would be Diablo 2. It's 9 years old and the game is still very active and is a point and click game for the most part. If they brought D3 to consoles some people including me couldn't help but think the series would severely suffer in quality from it.

look at this example of pc fanboy
