I think the reason their might appear to be so much negativity towards the title, is because VII was so popular and sold so well. Many people may have been expecting VIII to be a similar game to that of VII - but perhaps their expectations were not met.

see that point right there I don't get. As someone posted just above you how similar they are if you try and find similarities. The battle system was insanely better in 8. i hated the 7 system, was dumb imo. could complain about a bunch of other things i found simply retarted and done before about 7. Of course I had played 8, 9, 10 before 7. So maybe that changes things.
just like people going on about how ocarina of time is stupid and horrible and they are just playing it like this year or something and comparing it to all other games they played since its release. Peoples favorites are all based on when they played the game and age and other factors. A young 10-15 year old playing ff7 when released will see it as the second coming and can't get enough of it and its awesomeness.
Its like their first time having sex, they will remember it forever and think of how amazing it was. But take a 25 year old who has been having sex for 8 years or whatever and somehow force his consciousness into his 17 year old body having sex for the first time. He would be thinking "OMG, wow this was horrible. I have had WAY better sex tons of times than this." And how often do we have kids who started on PS2 days or heck even this gen boasting about how amazing some game is and the greatest ever. And they say they tried to play some old game "ocarina" or whatever you want ot put into there and how they couldnt' get past an hour before quitting, and how could you play that game teh graphics were so shitty, or controls or whatever.
