no, there are no minigames. The Excite series gameplay is about scoring the most stars at the end of the race. Whoever has the most stars is the winner - not necessarily the person that finishes the race first.

They just throw in a lot of random stuff for how you earn those stars - such as the soccer ball, bowling pins, etc. It's still purely racing, you just have a mess of stars you've gotta earn, and you've got a LOT of different ways to earn them.

 

So this is like Gripshift on the PS3, PSP, and 360.

Vaguely similar, except the Excite series has been doing this kind of stuff since the NES days. Two decades before Gripshift was even considered.
