Forums - Gaming - Are We Taking This Gen For Granted?

I mean my 360 is sick at the moment so I am falling back on old PC games to play.

My PC was not built for gaming so I am limited as to what I can play.

But playing games like project ICG, COD1, Nightfire etc has made me realise how good todays games are.

While CoD4/5 are really fun online, I'll still take CoD1:UO's mp over them - it was the only one in the entire series that wasn't a braindead shooter. It started with CoD2....the PC version ran horribly, it started using a health regen system, the HUD became littered with hints and tips (like the grenade indicator), maps went back to being small so grenade spam and automatics (which also got reduced recoil) became dominant, and it kept gettin more and more casual friendly all the way upto CoD5 now with it's overpowered tanks, which happen to be perfectly balanced in CoD:UO.

I can't really say I appreciate this gen because of a few reasons. The thing I love most about today is the online play, but so far N64 probably remains as the most fun I've had on a console.

This gen is (at least) four years old. Most previous generations would be on their last leg, with gamers looking forward to the next one by now. Not so with the 7th gen. We are still gushing over graphics and anticipating the next innovations.

Killzone 2's graphics, the Wii's untapped potential, Xbox Live and PSN's updates, the HD console war, Wii Motion Plus, -It goes on and on. This gen may very well be legendary by the time it's all said and done. AND I LOVE IT!!

We are taking things for granted. I've been gaming for decades, and I've never seen a generation like this one!

With the exception of platformers, top down shooters, and SRPGs, pretty much all games now are better than their counterparts of the past imo.

Thanks to Valkyria Chronicles, I would say the SRPG genre has taken a big leap forward as well. We just don't get as many of them, or any others of that level of quality.
