Forums - Sony - How Sony defeated Sony

@ Rpruett

What people don't realize is when you combine both of the HD consoles you get a number that is greater than the Wii.

I agree, IMO it's best for Nintendo to concentrate mainly on cute games. They have a great reputation for that. Sony's reputation is more multi-media and high spec home cinema orientated.

Sony still has the PS2, which is still a nice cheap alternative to the Wii. (Of course it doesn't compete much anymore, due to market saturation and availability of the high definition targeted PS3)

Sony realized that price matters to most consumers far more than releasing the most cutting edge technology.

I am sure Sony wanted the PS3 to be cutting edge, but I think the managers didn't realize what it would amount to allowing Ken so much freedom, building his ultimate multi-media console.

Nevertheless I am happy about this, games like Uncharted, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc are IMO simply awesome! The increased competition will keep Sony on their toes to demonstrate the PS3's added value.

Oh don't get me wrong, I am very happy about this.  I just feel like from a 'mass market' standpoint a lot of people won't be/weren't willing to part with the original price tag of 600$.  The Wii came out of the gate as the cheapest entry point with a unique controlling mechanism and the Nintendo namespace.   The 360 came out of the gate as the cheapest entry point into HD gaming.   What Sony really needed to do was make a cheaper system that could compete with the 360 better on a price standpoint  And once HD gaming got more fleshed out (IE: PS4/Xbox 720 generation)  make more of a heavy hitting all in one console like the PS3 is.

With that being said,  I feel that Sony has a lot of flexibility moving forward with the PS3 (As long as it stays relatively close with the 360 in terms of user base / sales) in terms of price, power and brand loyalty.

But they don't need to be, not everyone owns a Crysis-proof PC neither. Eventually most will upgrade their PC and be able to play Crysis. I think it's nice they developed Crysis for top range hardware to show of what newer PCs can do, apart from its graphics the game itself isn't the best.

What Sony really needed to do was make a cheaper system that could compete with the 360 better on a price standpoint

I don't agree personally, I would not have minded if the PS3 would have been more expensive and more highly specced, provided of course 1st parties provide even more impressive games.

I think they should just concentrate on maturing the PS3 further, cut out costs and continue to produce Epic games and expanded functionality which demonstrate well the PS3 hardware.

We will see how competing with the 360 goes in the future, but personally I am happy my PS3 being more sturdy, nearly noiseless, has Blu-Ray/Cell and harddrive by default and already has distinguishly impressive games available. (Of course quality R&D and manufacturing costs money, money I am happy to invest in a quality product)

It may well be that for the long run the 360 will not be able to compete with the PS3.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Only on page 4 so I appologize if this has been said already.  At work and I gotta get back to work soon so again I appologize.

Anyways, something nobody has brought up to that point is software sales.  So many of you fanboys are claiming the ps3 is outselling the 360.  Yes, it often does.  And how many games do those people buy?  Many, many people buy ps3's primarily as a blu-ray player.  They might buy one or two games, but it's fairly rare for many consumers who buy a ps3.  The 360, on the other hand, is a pure gaming machine.  I can't imagine ANYONE is buying one to use as a dvd player, and the software sales show it.

Gonna restate another thing that's been said before.  Fanboys like the guy with the alucard avatar are doing their damndest to ignore it.  The 360 has a year head start.  It's sold a lot more consoles than the ps3 has and that's really hurting sony.  A lot.  It doesn't matter if sony is outselling the 360.  It's not gonna surpass the 360's overall sales for a long time, if it does at all.  That's what matters.  Overall sales.  You can try to say otherwise, but you're wrong.  There's no other way of looking at it in the business world.  If you think otherwise, you obviously have never had anything to do with any kind of business management in your life.  Is sony dead?  No.  But saying they're just fine, or that they're actually beating M$ is just delusional stupidity.

What you're saying here sounds retarded (I'm not saying you are retarded you just sound retarded here).

Let's say a bum on the street who has AIDS finds a nice watch and runs up to me and starts yelling "Haha I have a nicer watch then you!". Do I feel bad? No, because even if he has a nice watch I'm happy because I'm not homeless and I don't have AIDS.

It's the same thing with the 360's console lead. Yes the 360 has sold more but it has been out longer and is half the price. You cant ignore these facts. Unless you smoke crack.

You do realize that sounds like fanboyism?

Software sales seem to suggest the average PS3 owner is a healthy games buyer. Taking the evidence of software sales with various 3rd parties claiming to earn more money on the PS3 than they earned on the 360 last year, IMO arguments like many PS3 owners only buy Blu-Ray movies or many PS3 owners only buy PS3 games (if it suits the argument) is getting old.

GTA IV for example according to Rockstar sold just as well on the PS3 as it did on the 360 despite the PS3's smaller install base at this point. Tomb Raider Underworld for example sold better on the PS3 despite its smaller install base, there are plenty of such examples.

IMO it's save to say the bulk of PS3 owners buy PS3 games, quite a few buy Blu-Ray movies in addition and maybe there are a few people here and there who don't care about gaming at all and use the PS3 only as a multi-media device.

I'm not ignoring those facts.  The ps3 may do very well in the future.  The fact is, it's not doing very well now.  The 360 has many more software sales when compared with the ps3 and the ps3 loses a lot of its exclusives because devs know they just can't make that much money releasing only on the ps3.  >< My grammar is crap right now, sorry.  I got called in to work at 4 am and i'm hella tired atm.  This last hour or so is the only slow time i've had since.  =/

And yes I know I sound like a fanboy, because I rarely say anything overly positive about the ps3.  I just don't see anything overly positive about the ps3 besides the capability to play blu-ray movies.  It has very few good exclusives compared to the 360, and the online service isn't as good as the xbox.  All this is slowly improving though.  PSN is almost as good as the xbox nowadays and they're finally getting a few good exclusives this year.  I've given them a lot more praise lately than I ever have before.  For once i'm actually glad I own a ps3.  People who havn't played MGS4, KZ2 or valkyria chronicles are really missing out.  I think the reason i'm so negative about it here is so many people like to pretend that sony isn't in trouble.  They are at the moment.  They're not dead, and they may do very well in the future.  I hope they do.  Companies need competition to remain great.

Interesting fact i'm just gonna throw out there, because rockstar says the ps3 version sold about as well as the 360 version.  The gamestop I was at for the midnight release had about 80-100 people in line.  They thought they'd split the line into 360 vs ps3 people to make it go faster.  Three people got out of line for the ps3 version.  o_0  I think I live in 360 fanboy country lol.  When I went to pick up KZ2 there were like 15 of us there.  Halo wars had about 70.  The ps3 is extremely unpopular around here.  Just thought i'd throw that odd piece of info out there.  The guy saying gta4 sold about equally well just reminded me of that.

Sony never defeated Sony. Nintendo just decided to get back into the game.

Sony got on top? Nintendo defeated Nintendo.

Sony gets wasted? Nintendo decided to win.

It was only a matter of time people.

Tease.
