Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo DS, A Brief History. As we reach a Milestone.

I won't be surprised if it had already outsold the original Gameboy or if it will soon.

Having said that, 3 cheers to the Mini Super Famicom! For those who are wondering, I like to refer to the DS as a "Mini Super Famicom" .

I wonder if it will beat the PS2 (more than 140M)... But well, thx to the DS for bringin good RPG's, that's what I need now!

No doubt it will. Total software sales though will be lower due to lower attach rate (but still highest among portables).

Salute DS, it brought me into handheld gaming. I was pro-PSP'er back in 2005, now I completely changed my mind. Considered myself a Ninty fan from now on.

How about 500 million? A billion? 7 billion DS's

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

The DS is deserving of every sales it gets. Now a new chapter will open as it crosses the 100 Million mark with the advent of the DSi release to the rest of the world.

Will we see a successor next year? Perhaps 2011 instead? Either way the DS will keep trucking along to become one the best selling video game consoles in history, if not THE best selling system in history.

Well the DS has to sell 40m more units to beat the PS2 ... Looks the DSi is not pushing it that much in japan, so I wouldn't be so sure.

What?

DS WW sales last year 31.8M... this year so far 4.3M (0.5M more compared to Jan-Feb 2008). DS will pass PS2 sales (140M, you said?) in Q1-Q2/2010.
