Forums - Gaming - Most JRPG are said to be on a 5th grade reading level, but what about...

Xenogears?

What reading level would you think this game is? I was just asking myself this about 10 minutes ago and wondered what you guys here thought.

Worded it wrong. I meant that most JRPG storylines are written on a 5th grade reading level.

You know what I meant. -.-

im confused, how can a game be at a reading level?

also what age are fifth graders so i can better understand what youre saying

I would say no higher really. It's vocabulary isn't any more complex, and having a sci-fi story that is more complex than a hardy boys book doesn't really mean it's David Foster Wallace. It's wording and dialogue isn't any more complex than any other RPG, it just has a cool story and a kick ass sound track.

Things can be "written at a reading level".

Read my 2nd post. I admitted to writting the title wrong. Although I think it is pretty easy to understand what I meant.

5th graders should be around 10-11 years old I would say.

I'm not saying it is extremely high level, but can you see a 10-11 year old fully grasping the game's storyline?

in which case, RPG stories would be more complex than that, probably more like 15-16

Maybe not a 10 year old, but I was maybe 13 when I played it and understood it fine. So what? 6th grade reading level?

Xenogears' writing is quite simplistic, and the story is convoluted at times. It's writing is still better than most JRPGs I played, but that's not saying much...
