Forums - Gaming - Goldeneye/Perfect Dark is STILL the best FPS ever!

GoldenEye was the last mission-based shooter that had missions I actually enjoyed.

It also gets bonus points for being the only game based on a movie to not completely suck.

It also gets bonus points for having some of the coolest cheats (DK Mode, Paintball, crazy shit like that).

It also wasn't the first console FPS. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Doom 64 both came out a few months before it, but neither of those were as important/popular/successful. You could even play Super Noah's Ark 3-D on SNES 3 years earlier, and nobody cared about that either.

Blah. Those games have never been the best fps games.

Which ones do you think is/have been the best?

Goldeneye was only the best FPS for a few years, until Perfect Dark.

But as awesome as that is, it feels so clunky to go back to it now. Try playing somethng that handles as beautifully as Metroid Prime 3, or even something like Red Steel and then play Perfect Dark. It can't compare

I have to disagree. How long since you really played the games? I don`t think it`s clunky at all.

a few months now that you mention it. Our student common room/pub has a N64 set up

Ok. Clunky in what way? Please be more specific.

Maybe clunky isn't the right word. The framerate was fine and there was no problem with draw distance, but the controls weren't great.

If I am to play an FPS with analogue sticks, there had better be one stick for movement and one for looking. I just ended up running around looking dumb the entire time. And that's just not what I want from shooters. I want the game to be hard, but only because you are presented with a tough tactical decision, not because your character decides randomly to shoot the ceiling.

It also didn't help that the controllers were all battered and had loose sticks

Try changing the controller options to what suits you best. Then come back here and write about clunky. Thank you.

I just checked with Half Life series, and I have to find your view wanting. They were good - but not that good IMHO. I will admit I'm biased to PC though for FPS, so I guess my view ain't too surprising.

I'm not sure which is the best but in truth I'm not sure a console FPS would make my top 5 - oh well, I'll just slip into this flame resistant suit...

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
