Forums - Gaming - IGN: Is Final Fantasy VII overrated?

When one asks if something is overrated, one is actually making a comparison between things that are rated properly and those things that are not . IGN refers to Zelda Ocarina of Time as an overrated game several times in this FFVII article and say it is overrated in the same way as FFVII in not being as good as earlier games in the series. Since IGN is discussing Zelda in the article being discussed here, then that means that Zelda can be discussed here. I make the contention that FFVII is actually far less overrated in comparison to the earlier games in its series than is OoT is actually no worse in quality than OoT is probably better, and the following FF games are probably some of the most underrated games of all time especially amongst vocal minorities in the fan community while the reverse seems to be true with later Zelda games in professional publications see Game Informer's article from 2004 where they say Windwaker was the best game of its gen when games like ICO were actually superior.

No, one isn't. That isn't what being underrated or overrated is about, because the quality of games as intrinsic experiences exists in a vacuum, as does each individual review.

When one says that a game is "overrated" or "underrated" it implies an erroneous difference between the perceived quality of the game and its actual quality. Yes, the implication in these titles is that there is some objective standard of quality which these games do not meet, either by being above or below the accepted level, but it is still a fact of the game itself and has nothing to do with its competition. If you think that "overrated" means "overrated compared to other games", I don't know what to tell you except "overrated does not mean what you think it means".

The rest of your post has nothing to do with this topic.

They are right about being brought in with that game.

I started playing FF after I had purchased FF VII, and yes, I absolutely loved that game (although I probably couldn't be bothered to do it all again). I also loved VIII. I have tried playing VI but it just didn't get to me after VII and VIII.

IX was an abomination to me, since it was too kiddy (for me). X was the first with speech and was fun to play, but too easy and I didn't like the portrayal of the main char.

The problem with other titles was that both VII and VIII had something magical about them that will always tie me to those titles.

VII : first I've played and incredibly fun to play (for me), so much to do, and aeris' death - no matter how much you hate the title - is an absolute shocker of a twist. Sephiroth - even if he acts stupidly - is a cool nemesis.

VIII: that card game was stupid but I couldn't stop playing :p and that scene in space with the song = clinched that game totally.

Overrated? Perhaps, but I thoroughly enjoyed the game and I'm glad it actually brought me into RPG's, so it did everything I wanted it to do.

I do feel that FF 7 was a bit over-rated, though a part of it is due to the resentment that Chrono Cross, quality-wise not much behind FF7 imo, kind of got lost in the shadow of its more popular cousin, and never got the praise it deserved.

@papflesje

Final Fantasy IX was not an abomination!! At least in 9 you had balance, where you had your warrior, your white magic users, your black magic users etc. The part that ruined Final Fantasy 7 at least for me was the fact that you could just switch fire, water, bio etc from one character to another at any given time. Also it made zero sense to use most of your magics or summon spirits since your battle attack for all characters was for the most part stronger than magic. By the end of the game every character is doing 9999 damage with normal attacks and that made the magic aspect of the game pointless and lame. Now everything else about the game is pretty cool the story the cinematic the fighting. But in final Fantasy 9 you can attack with your warrior just fine but you are not going to be attacking with your black magic character Vivi because his regular attacks suck and his magic is great. There is just so much more balance to final Fantasy 9 that I can not say part 7 is better.

@ rap: that's true, but I nuanced my opinion by stating that it was the kiddy part that ruined IX for me. I purchased it, played it, but didn't get any feel out of it because of that, especially after the rather mature VII and VIII.

And I didn't play FF VII to perfection, meaning my attacks didn't get to 9999 all around, meaning that there was still some challenge left for me :p

Final Fantasy VII is probably my favourite game of I've ever played.

And yes, it is overrated. In my view it's not the best games ever but it is my favourite and this is due to it being the first Final Fantasy I played and one of the first games that really had me nervous about the final battle and enticed me in.

As a game it's overrated, hailing it as a mesiah type game is just silly.

And yes, ALL FINAL FANTASY GAMES ARE GREAT. Just because they ren't as good as the last one or better etc, doesn't mean they aren't better then 95% of all other games out there.

Hmm, pie.

Well, if there were 5% of the games on Ps2 that were better than the Final Fantasies, that would mean there were over 130 games that were better than them. 85 games on Psx.

And that's just the PS ones, which obviously had the lowest average quality pr game.
