Forums - Sales - Sony: PS3 is hard to develop for--on purpose

The Sony Computer Entertainment CEO explains why. The strategy might have worked on the PS2 but will it work on a market with much more competition than before?

We've known this for moths.

Sigh... Kaz needs to shut up...

Sony has switched gears and is leaning on 1st and 2nd party games which know how to develop for the Ps3. Naughty Dog has stated that they haven't reached the full potential yet and have made a guide on how to develop games for the console as well as offering help to other studios such as Guerilla Games during KZ2 development.

I don't think it was on purpose, seems more like Sony spin but their shift to rely less on 3rd party support was a smart move.

Midway should stop crying and learn from companies such Konami and Guerilla who created masterpieces on the PS3....

This quote is lol worthy:

"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that (developers) want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is, what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?" explained Hirai.

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

Yeah this is old news, but I don't believe they really did it on purpose. They're just trying to retroactively justify their bad hardware decisions.

One of the strongest points in Windows is the support that Microsoft offer to developers. The MSDN, Visual Studio (IMO the best development enviroment of all), etc are powerfull tools that help a lot to develop software on Windows, they offer training on coding best practices, software engeneering (for their platform obviously). Most of the value of the Windows platform comes from the vast library of software avaliable to it. MS always knew that 3rd party support was important for the Windows and they will try o apply that to the X360, making development for the X360 easier, cheaper and faster.
Sony is putting quite a burden and costs on the developers.

@NJ5

What bad hardware decisions would those be then?? I mean the 360 has had and continues to have major hardware issues (your console of choice if memory serves) so that comment seems to be a bit petty!

The decisions which made the PS3 hard to develop for of course.

(and no, the 360 is not my platform of choice, in fact it lags behind Wii/PC)
