Forums - Gaming - Future: Nintendo could be only video game seller and have monopoly

Console gaming would be dead if that happened.

Nintendo = the worst of the 3 console makers.

I'd have to become a PC gamer.

Wow, that is totally true and none of it is from an angry Sony Fanboy.

Wait...

Nintendo does not have "games for everyone".  Lack of mature titles or not, 480p (or less!) is simply unacceptable for those of us playing on 50" monitors.  I'm part of "everyone" and they have zero games for me.

Are you saying that you can't play games with bad graphics? For shame. Missing out on a lot of fun.

if microsoft and sony dropped out and stopped selling their consoles and making games for them, would that stop third parties from continuing to make games for them for a time at least?

come try out the computer game i've been working on for my high school senior project, titled sling ball. http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=47568

current mk wii worldwide sales (jan 9th): 553k

I dont think it would ever happen, but that the industry needs is more 'dedicated' console game companies than overpriced mulit-media stations.

Sure Nintendo had added some non-games applications, but how often do you use them, I never do on mine, except to show off to people who have never played on the Wii before.

There will never be a 1 console generation, some console makers will dissapear, but others wil always be there to step in when one of the 'Big 3' fold

At this point, a very strong argument could be made that Nintendo does not need third parties for success - in fact, the opposite may slowly be becoming true.

Hardly.  They've set up a strong system (and handheld) and made a whole new wave of first party titles.  But they need the third parties to secure success for the long term.  Or else, they will be in the same state Sony is in this gen and they were in last gen.

Feel free to elaborate as to why.

I edited my post.  And I also said why in my first post.  Even if MS and Sony drop out, some other company will try their hand at making a console to compete with Nintendo.  And Nintendo never wants to be the only one making games.

Obviously, but the implication of "But they need the third parties to secure success for the long term.  Or else, they will be in the same state Sony is in this gen and they were in last gen." is that Nintendo is dependent on third parties for survival, when this generation so far has clearly shown that third parties, at this point in time, are not able to decide the course of a system's life. If they could, the Wii would already be dead.

Its not that they need Third parties to stay alive, I said they need them to secure success for the long term.

Nintendo has already gone through two generations with little to no third party support (the N64 and GameCube).  This shows that they can 'survive' with little to no third party support.  Now what they need to be successful and go beyond simply supporting themselves (and frankly the industry) is that third party support.

Three. Three generations with little third party support. N64, Gamecube, and Wii.

The fact that the Wii is successful, and not just "surviving", shows that the 3rd party level is not an important factor, there are other reasons behind Nintendo's failure and success.

You are simply stating something that you believe to be common sense, without any evidence supporting it, and when there is evidence against it, you simply add "it will only happen in the long term".

This is not different from the old doomsaying of 2006, that "Wii graphics will get outdated on the long term" "HD price cuts will kill Nintendo on the long term"  "casual gamers will get bored on the long term", or "the HD consoles will have even more killer games on the long term".

You expect different results from doing the same thing over an over again. :P

I really have no idea what you are talking about.  But if you're trying to say that Nintendo is going to be fine for the rest of its days and doesn't need third parties because of the 'Wii' line and the last 3 years its been outselling everyone with games like Mario Kart and Brain Age, you need to reasses the situation.

Nintendo more than anyone knows that success is fleating and they shouldn't put all their eggs in one basket.  They want the third parties to work on their system and made it their goal early on when the Wii came out.  And the third parties shunned them.  I have no idea why you guys are trying to advocate so strongly that I guess Nintendo isn't.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

And again, why would third parties not put games on the Nintendo console if it were the only one on the market?  Ever heard of the NES or the SNES?  I'm going to go with no since you made that 480p comment.  Obviously, you weren't playing games before this generation started.

Wow I sure as hell that doesn't happen. I'd have to stop being a gamer lol.

I'm not sure I understand this mentality.

I think I could live with the awful graphics, but if being a gamer meant having to use motion controls... ugh, can't say that would be of interest at all.  Now if Nintendo went back in time and went with a conventional controller, than I might reconsider.

It's all about the game.

You've never really played very many Wii games, have you.

No. Did Sony take over as a monopoly when the PS1/2 crossed 100 million?
