Looks like I might start playing my PSP again when these new games arrive.

This is great for the PSP -- and I don't even own one (but I would consider getting one as I have begun to realize that portable gaming is often a lot more feasible for me than console gaming).
I think that Gamerace may be onto something -- Sony needs to find profits from somewhere. The PS2 train is not the engine it once was. So it may be hoping the PSP brings them needed cash.
What I wonder though is whether or not the sales of these games will justify the investment. In other words, will people buy the games or just "acquire" them? That has always been the problem with Sony's portable.

Ask me a question, what do you consider AAA?
@Gamerace
Ps3 games don't automatically take 3-4 years to develop the only reason they took so long was because they were creating engines for their games they already have their engines now so its going to start being faster 2 years max..
see resistance 2 and uncharted 2.
Also just because the PSP is getting more support this year doesn't mean the Ps3 is getting any less they have specific teams dedicated to that stuff they CAN develop for more than 2 platforms..
And we don't even know who's making these yet.. the upcoming announcements are 1st 2nd AND 3rd party..
they could all be 3rd party for all you know
OT.
With these upcoming AAA games along with others such as LBP, Resistance, KZ, AC and others with their new design coming for the holidays AND with the new DSi being the same price..
I think Sony may have just caught Nintendo with their pants down.

You're not considering development time. PS3 games take 3-4 years to develop. Killzone was already in development long before launch. Same with GT5. So this years line up was committed to when Sony (and others) expected great things of the PS3. PSP development time is about 18 months. So about 12 - 18 months ago Sony decided to invest heavily in PSP. But is it instead of the PS3 or as well? Either way this surprisingly large commitment to PSP must come at the expense of PS3 development. You just won't notice any drop in the number of PS3 games for another 1-2 years because of it's longer development time. Good point about: GT5P |
I see your point about the dev time for PS3 games, there could be a slow down, but we wont notice it anytime soon, only time will tell.
PSP software definitelly has a higher profit margin, now im sure sony would prefer to push both consoles, remember they only make money on the software on the PS3, only reason it would slow down would be PS4 or sony to be done home consoles ( PS4 i think is more likely, earliest i can see it is 2012 )

Sony’s not taking the “Grand Theft Auto” series’ move from PSP to DS as a permanent shift, the company’s head of PSP marketing in America told me in an interview.

After two successful “Grand Theft Auto” games on the PSP, the world’s most notorious gaming franchise is making its next portable outing — “Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars” — on Nintendo’s DS.
But Sony isn’t ready to let portable “GTA” out of its grasp.
“No one should sleep on that franchise,” John Koller, Sony’s head of PSP hardware marketing in North America, told me in a phone interview yesterday. “That’s a tremendous franchise for PlayStation in general. We’ve had two that are the top two sellers on PSP right now. So, there’s definitely continued conversations with ['GTA' development studio] Rockstar on all their brands. That’s nothing that’s left the PlayStation family.”
Regarding “Chinatown Wars,” Koller doesn’t see it squarely matching with the DS fanbase, which the classifies as predominantly under 12 years of age. “It’s an interesting launch on DS,” Koller said. It raises some eyebrows in a lot of areas. It’ll be interesting to see how that sells.”
“Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars” ships on March 17. No new PSP “GTA” s are announced.
