Forums - Nintendo - What went wrong with Deadly Creatures

See, my perspective, as a gamer and a game designer, is that I would picture this to be a game targeted at schoolage boys, who like bugs, insects, etc. The title isn't really exciting. they could have made it be called something like "Extinction: Survival" or whatever. It makes people seeing the game say "ooh, survival game" and read more about it. Plus the amount of people saying its an oxymoron will get it discussed more. "Deadly Creatures" sounds like a Discovery channel show.

Honestly, I cant think of HOW to pitch this game. Its just too strange for me to really wrap up into a key few sentences.

It's sad, I'm really enjoying this game right now. It has it's problems obviously, but the combat in this game really grips me, you get a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment when you defeat enemies.

Bland name (gets lost among the shovelware) and no niche marketing are main problems.

I am suprised at the number of gamers on this very site (and on ONM) who were not planning on picking it up purely because they don't like bugs. (odd that they don't mind excessive blood and violence but can't watch CGI arachnids)

I really didn't expect anything out of it at all sales wise, I was expecting it to be lucky to reach 100k. I mean check out the VGC games page, this is probably one of the most concentrated section of the internet for the kind of Nintendo fans who like niche stuff like this, and only 35 owners.

With good word of mouth it could manage somewhere between 50k and 100k though.

36 now. Finally got around to upgrading my game collection. =P

You just reminded me I need to play Zack and Wiki again... I finished the main story and have currently got about 1/3rd of the extra treasure chests... but some of them are incredibly obscure.

I also have not yet managed to complete one of the bell ringing tasks.

well if you want to know what went wrong here is the simple answer.

Ask anyone if they even know what it is (that doens't go to gaming site).

Heck even my gaming friends who visit sites once in a while, I would not be surprised if not a single one of them even has heard of the game.

I barely even know of it and didn't know release date. all i know is some insect game (didn't interest me) and that for some reason 3rd parties were gonna watch this game and how well it sold on Wii. No idea why either, i don't see this game selling well on anything, ever. Just doesn't have that big of appeal to people to be an insect and fight other insect. (what's the point?)

Making you a perfect example of what I said, except that you don't have an aversion to bugs but rather somehow see an action game involving them as inferior to what are very similar action games with people as characters (or even people against mutant space insects, which is already half way there to being bugs fighting bugs)

To be honest from what I have seen of Madworld, it is a very similar game to Deadly Creatures, except of course the artstyle and the use of humans instead of creatures.

What prevented me from buying this game is the dropping frame rates and the bugs that were mentioned in the reviews. I really think that games that are not fully polished should not even be allowed to be released.

Other than that, average reviews and lack of advertising sure do not help.

me either. Whoever pitched the game and got it greenlited is a genius. I think any dev studio that want to pitch a new idea (or a totally whack idea) should hire this guy.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

You could take it that way... or you could focus on the fact that it's hard to be interested in game at all if you know almost nothing about it regardless of what it is.
