Forums - Sales Discussion - Reuters: Xbox 360 beats PS3, Wii - numbers inside

I'm more surprised that the ps3 almost beat the wii as well! What's going on WII?!

It's what's not going on with the Wii that's hurting it.  I am not sure why it's not being slowed down in American too, but I see some big issues there.

1. No price cut

2. No Street Fighter IV

3. No Star Ocean

4. No AAA game in last 6 months

5. No new colors

6. Wii Motion Plus still not out

7. Conduit still not out

8. Madworld still not out

MS RPG strategy is slowly paying off. Good on them. But do they have anymore (in Japan) after SO4?

Not much... just Magna Carta: Horse Nipples Crimson Stigmata and probably something from Mistwalker. Nothing to rival FFXIII, certainly.

Didn't Mistwalker have to cancel Cry On for financial reasons?

Blue Dragon2 is rumored, Ninety Nine Nights² is confirmed. But MS will most likely take care that a next wave of JRPGs is coming.

Nothing huge so far, but we will see.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Yeah. Technically it was AQ Interactive, but same difference.

Sakaguchi announced he's starting his next large scale project, though, and it's not for the Wii, so I'd bet on it being the next JRPG arrow in Microsoft's quiver.

Good for MS. Not so great for Wii. Steady for PS3 at least. Wonder how long it'll stay like this. Wii and PS3 about tied and 360 about half of them (this is an odd week as 360 had SO4). Guess we'll wait til after RE5 week to see how things settle in Japan but man all 3 are in need of something. Even if Wii is down and on the sales of the rest, what does that say about everyone else. If no one can pick up where Wii has slacked off, then Wii will still win this generation but overall all 3 will lose.

Something needs to be done in Japan to boost sales and more along the lines of Sony and Nintendo. Not much MS can do to help this market, actually only hurt it by slowing sales of Ps3 and Wii. So we'll see what Sony and Nintendo can do over this year and hopefully turn console sales around. If not, it seems we'll just be looking at continued DS and PSP domination even if there sales are down as well.

Im surprised the PS3 didnt. The Wii hasnt released anything of note in Japan since December, the PS3 has. If Sony cant get their act together during this Wii lull, they're in for a bad 2009.

It's not really fair to say that Wii had no AAA games in the last 6 months in Japan and also mention that SF4 and SO4 are not on Wii.  Animal Crossing Wii and Wii Music are going to sell much better in the world and Animal Crossing is going to do much more than just beat the combined sales of SF4 and SO4 in Japan.

I'm also not sure if Japanese Wii gamers will care much for the Conduit or Madworld.

Your others points seem very good, though.  It's Nintendo's fault that it's system isn't selling great in Japan.

Yea Wii has got essentially nothing right now in Japan to grab in new gamers.  That and it has already almost sold 8 million compared to 2 and 1 million by the others meaning they have more to gain in such a lull while others are more likely to already have a Wii.  Essentially, Wii needs something big.  Monster Hunter 3, Wii Sports Resort, and Dragon Quest X are those big things.  A pricedrop or new color or a bundle would help as well.  Monster Hunter G should help.  But of course those aren't all necessarily in the near future.  Some are close such as Spring but still go to survive another month or 2 before then.  Going to be quite the lull for Wii so it will sell close to the PS3 if not behind it for some time depending on the releases.  360 will drop back down of course but stay closer than usual.  Going to be interesting in Japan for awhile but on a smaller scale haha.

conflicting numbers, none the less great.

Yeah, who is Ascii Media Works?  Nevertheless, you are right.  Even though all of those numbers are likely wrong, they are still in the correct order.

Just because you never heard of them , doesn't mean they are irrelevant. ASCII, among other things, are the publishers of Dengeki.
