Forums - General - No comment on Obama's speech or Jindal's response? Wow!

I was sure someone would post it ... especially after Chris Matthews on MSNBC said 'Oh, God' when Jindal waltzed to the mic to give the GOP response.

Thoughts? Did anyone watch it?

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Im actually a little worried now about the insane amounts of money Obama is proposing to spend. I understand the rationale behind the stimulus package, but I am worried about the insane amounts of spending IN ADDITION to the 800 billion already marked to be spent.

The budget that congress is proposing is supposed to have something like 8000 + earmarks in pet projects. I'd like to see Obama drop the veto hammer on all those earmarks and tighten up the budget a little

can you post video or something? :P

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Jindal was awkward, and his voice is very smokey. But what did you expect? Him to have an indian accent and act all laid back?

1 question though:

When obama said he would cut the deficit by 1/2, did anybody else see that chart the republicans showed afterwards? Pretty ugly if you ask me...
But you gotta spend money to make money (In the extremely long term)

I read the transcript in lieu of watching the address on television. I have been discussing it with my contemporaries. It was disappointing, although it did not reveal anything we did not already know.

All i'm confused about is the rationale behind cutting the tax breaks people get from making charitable contributions.

I've yet to see that fleshed out.

Seems like... well stealing from charities.

The fatal flaw in his plan, is he expects to increase revenue for the government by raising taxes on the rich. That never works. If you want to collect more money, you have to lower there taxes. You can raise taxes on the poor and middle call and it's effective, but the rich is not.

The amount of money you collect from the rich is a constant 19.5% of our GDP. You could double taxes on the rich, and the percent of GDP you collect from them is the same. The problem is, as you raise taxes on the rich, the GDP goes down, thus total dollars you collect from them (and everyone else) goes down.

So there is no way Obama is going to obtain the revenue he thinks he is (well, he tells you he is, he knows he is not going to get it).

You can argue about that either way.  I want to see how even the most liberal democrat explains reducing benefits for charitable work.

I thought people wanted the government to pick up where charties miss... not destroy charties.
