Yeah but that's easier said than done for most people... How many times did you die before beating him? Of course if you play a lot of games in this genre it gets much easier. Though this is one of the fastest ones so that alone doesn't do the trick. In any case, your strategy doesn't really qualify as button mashing in my book. For me, button mashing consists in just getting near an enemy, mashing some buttons (sometimes without even knowing the move patterns) and with nearly 100% probability will kill him without getting much hurt. Almost no blocking or dodging needed. There are games which can be mostly passed by doing that, while in NG you can at best barely pass the first batch of enemies with this strategy.

I only died twice on him. Then again I do play a lot of games in this genre. What boss is what you explain button mashing to be? None in God of War. Also any none boss baddies in NG2 can be killed with just the top button.
Oh I consider button mashing differnt for action adventure, what you said, i feel is fighting. Action adventure button mashing is when just pressing one button over and over again and you can kill most baddies in a game. Certainly not the case in GoW when you consider all the huge things that but rape you, and the gorgans turning you to stone.
