Forums - Gaming - Gears and not God of War deserves the acronym GOW.

God of War was first, end of discussion.

The reason MK now refers to Mario Kart is because its an active franchise, I can't even remember the last Mortal Kombat game.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC was last year. Late last year.

Unless the acronym refers to quality, not quantity...

In which case... Gears still wins so uh....

Well to be fair they are both games with good gameplay and crappy stories.

However at least Gears doesn't pretend it's story is good.

I would agree basing this solely from Gears 1 but have you played Gears 2? There was a much greater effort to push the story and, in my opinion, it was very poorly executed.

Also, I would argue that the story telling is far greater in God of War than it is in Gears, regardless of the actual story.

Honestly i haven't played much of Gears 2 outside of Horde mode... based on the premise that the gameplay was all that mattered and Horde mode was going to give the best part of that.

As for the two stories... it's hard to tell.  It's like comparing Street Fighter: The Movie vs Encino Man.

Street Fighter: The Movie is the better move... but it's bad story combined with a complete lack of knowledge about the source matieral makes it more of a screw up.

LOL. You can go ahead and start using GOW for Gears. It's your human right. However, that will NEVER, EVER make it so.

Both are amazing games. Both are universally acclaimed. Gears will always be GeOW.

Bringing sales into it is irrelevant, especially when one is a shooter and the other isn't.

GOW3 will pwn!

^Hey... as for which is GOW... here is a good test.

Go to goole.

Type "GOW" then hit "I feel Lucky."

God of War doesn't even show up on the first 4 pages.

I've never been confused by the overlapping usage. They're games from different genres on different platforms so there really is no overlapping discourse about the two. I'm fine with both being called GoW.

Careful, you might blow a gasket.

But seriously now, speaking seriously.

People, language as a construct is generally accepted as a medium for communication, right? I mean, that's what it is by definition. We communicate ideas using words and word forms which symbolize certain meanings. When we speak the same language, we have an inferred agreement that certain words (or word forms, or phrases) are possessed of certain meanings symbolizing certain things. We are making sounds at each other in hopes of communicating complex ideas.

People are often under the impression that a language is a static thing in which the meaning of a wod is defined by its pre-existing meaning, like what is in the dictionary. But that isn't true. Words are defined by usage. That is why the dictionary is always changing.

If GoW ends up being used more to refer to Gears of War than God of War, then that is what GoW will have come ot mean, whether or not it originally meant God of War. That's the nature of language. The fact that one meaning was pre-existent in comparison to the other has no bearing on anything.

The arguments aren't going to change this. The usage is.

since i've known god of war as gow for years, it'll stay like that. i've always refered to gears of war 2 as gears 2 and everyone knows what i'm talking about.

you know you have descended into the pits of fanboy-dom, when you start fighting over non-trademarked acronyms

everyone has a different understanding of certain acronyms based on his/her experiences and threads like this one won't change that in any way

A consensus will inevitably be reached.

Considering the release dates of the last games in each series, what did you expect? I'll bet you that when god of war 3 releases, your google search results will change
