DICE 2009: The ‘LittleBigPlanet’ That Never Was

During a talk about his studio’s critical hit “LittleBigPlanet,” Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans described an earlier version of the game that had “physical tools” -

1) A shotgun that blew holes in things,

2) A hairdryer that melted stuff,

3) A gun that sprayed foam.

Problem: “It was great fun but all you could do was create melting piles of s–t.” So they dropped the tools, built the content editors and focused the gameplay on pushing, pulling and jumping.

Whatever happened to ice that freezes?

That looked pretty cool when they showed it off.

Well they ended up including that paint gun in the MGS4 downloadable content so perhaps we haven't seen the last of tools in LBP.

I think the shotgun MAY have been a bit too serious for LBP...but why'd they take out the rest?

I still think LBP is too cheery/happy. That's why it would've been interesting to see somethin like a shotgun making it's way into a game like this.

LBP would be ridiculously awesome if it had the same theme as that one new movie by Tim Burton (with the bootleg sackboys).

That sackboy looks pretty evil.

I'm with Soriku....why'd they take out the hair dryer and foam blasting gun? The shotgun would most likely would have ruined the image that Sony was trying to achieve with LBP, but these seemed harmless.

It'll still be there.

Funny story:

Some lady pre-ordered the original Rock Band for 360 two months before it came out back in 2007.  She paid it off in full, but never picked it up.

A year and a half later, a guy that was quitting from the store decided to cancel her pre-order and take the $170.  Two weeks later, she came to get her money back!

It all worked out well, though. They told her she wasn't in the system, but the DM was called and they comped her the money.

Because, as the article said, levels turned into a giant, muddy mess.  Imagine metling everything around you.  The level would be destroyed and you wouldn't be able to complete it.

If you went overboard with the melting, then sure, the level would be destroyed. But you could probably destroy a lot of levels if you screw around with tools.

You could have used the hairdryer to melt ice to proceed, to dry a piece of paper enough for it to be lit on fire to get rid of something, or to dry a towel after using it, in order to store it for later use or to continue mopping up the water from the ice you melted previously. There are a lot of possibilities that could have been implemented, that could have proved enjoyable.
