Forums - Gaming - What is the better fighter? Street Fight IV or Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

Just curious what yall thing?  I use to love fighting games back in the SNES and made it point to get every one I could and play them in the arcade but I just started losing interest in them as time went by.  Even with Super Smash Bros. Melee, I liked it, but couldn't get into it.  The last fighting game I was really interested in was Tekken Tag Tournament but nothing new had really compared since that game.

And then Super Smash Bros Brawl came out and I suddenly loved fighting games again.  I've seen and looked at the other ones coming out, but nonen of them really interested.  I was even 50/50 on Street Fighter IV.  I loved Street Fighter II Turbo back on the SNES but then I tried SFIIHD and it just wasn't the same.

On a whim I bought Street Fighter IV and instantly fell in love with the game.

So onto the actual thread-- for those of you that have played both, which do you think is the better fighting game?  Personally, I think these are easily the two best fighting games this gen, just curious what do you think is the better game?

Super Smash Bros Brawl

  • One of the most complete games ever
  • Excellent control
  • More controller choices than any game (remote, remote + nunchuck, Gamecube controller, Classic Controller) all fully customizable.
  • Easy to pick up and difficulty to master
  • One of the most epic soundtracks ever
  • Simple moves that anyone can pull off
  • Many different stages that all change the game
  • Different game modes with different win conditions
  • weapons and items
  • Graphics are good, one of the best looking games on the Wii
  • Very large cast of characters
  • Complete single player game
  • Online with friends works well
  • Online with strangers is painful
  • No way to actually communicate with people
  • No stat tracking

Street Fighter IV

  • Classic gameplay we all know and love
  • Excellent art style
  • Online with strangers and friends is easy
  • Variety of stages but they do absolutely nothing to affect the game
  • Not a lot of variety in characters.  Sure, there are 25 characters but how many of those are Ryu clones with slight tweaks?
  • Easy to pick up, difficult to master.
  • Move list full of random movements that can be difficulty to pull off (especially if you're playing on a certain notoriously bad D-Pad).
  • Stat tracking
  • Lack of variety in game modes.  You can choose match time and number of matches and that's it
  • Every game mode is essentially the same thing with the same conditions.
  • Ranked matches with strangers kick you out of the lobby after the match is over, you don't get to play the person again unless you just happen to see them.
  • Not a lot of control options.
  • I do have trouble finding matches with random people unless I make my own match.  When I look for a match and it brings up people, they're all already full and then have to search again.  I usually have to go through this 10 or so times before I finally find a match.  If I'm playing unranked, I can just keep playing the same person, but if I'm playing ranked, I finish the match and then have to start looking again.

Personally, I think I like Super Smash Bros Brawl a little more. They're both great games and I'm glad I have both because they both got me back into fighting games again (I even bought one of the Mad Catz controllers for the 360) but Super Smash Bros Brawl just offers so much more.

And it isn't just that it's more, it's that everyone that it offers is beyond excellent.

Apples and oranges.

I think 2D fighters and brawlers should be two different subgenres.

See, I see them both as 2D fighters though.

Can't say.. I haven't played SF4 but playing it with the 360 D-pad might make me stick to Brawl.

Pixel Art can be fun.

SFIV was superb when I played it at the arcade, loved it much more than SSBB.

Both are nothing compared to this mighty TEKKEN 6! Damn love that game.

I haven't play SFIV yet, but, Brawl's soundtrack is win. So yeah.

I'm sure my brother's gonna buy SFIV and force me to play it sometime, so I'll have a better view then^^

What do they have in common really?  You pick a character with special moves to defeat the other character.

Everything from movement to the stage to weapons to even how you win is different.

I think there are enough similarities to call them fighting games but too many differences to put them in the same category directly.  It's kind of like turn-based RPGs, strategy RPGs, and action RPGs.  Sure they're all RPGs, but the way each type of game plays is totally different so they're subgenres.

I don't think anyone cannot mention brawl it is the best game with friends ( offline and online )

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Ignoring WoW's semantical tangent, Brawl is definitely superior. I can tell that even without ever having played a Street Fighter game. :)

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made.  I won't open my unworthy mouth.
