Forums - Gaming - Console user age distribution according to Nielsen and usage percentage

I hightlighted some interesting points in the article and quoted the relevent parts in case you dont want to read the whole thing.

WII:

" Nintendo's console does a good job attracting boys age 6-11 and women age 25-34"

"Furthermore, usage of the Wii by women over 35 is much higher than with the Xbox 360 and PS3"

"the more traditional 18-24 age group (often looked at as the hardcore gamer demographic) has engaged in much less Wii usage – for both genders in this age range."

PS3

"Nielsen found the PS3 to skew the oldest of the three platforms, possibly because of consumer brand loyalty and since Sony dominated the market with the PS One in 1994 and PS2 in 2000"

" For both males and females, the highest usage came from the 18-24 age group"

XBOX360

"Microsoft's Xbox 360, meanwhile, seemed to find the middle ground between Wii and PS3"

"Among males, the largest percentage of usage was found in the 12-17 age group, older than Wii, but younger than PS3. For females, the 25-34 age group had the highest percentage of usage."

Overall Usage

"Overall, however, while the Wii was the least used console on average, the Xbox 360 saw males using the Xbox 360 on nearly twice as many days per month as females (10.2 vs. 5.4 in December). On the PS3 and Wii, usage breakdown by gender was much more balanced."

These numbers are based on Oct - Dec 2008, which was definitely a hard time for Wii owners. It would be interesting to compare with the numbers for the rest of the year.

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

My opinion, its the wrong period to be tracking. Thats when most of 08's core titles came out on the PS360.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Obviously it won't match half of us here, as we aren't "average" consumers.

Anyways, I'm 24, and I play the Wii the most, playing probably 20 days/month, which would be twice the average of an xbox user. Given the size of the Wii user base compared to the other consoles, the lower average use doesn't translate into less games bought overall. However, the high xbox use does show why the xbox is capable of moving so much software compared to its user base size.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
