Forums - PC - When, if ever will blu ray drives become standard.

Yeah. When do you think that blu ray drives will become standard on all computers. And also when most game devs will move to blu ray disks, If even you think it will ever take off. My guess is sbout 2012 it will become standard. but games may take a little longer. Burning crusade which came out in 2007 was originally on 4 cd's :)

Never.
BR will be a short-lived format.

Although i absolutely do not like the idea, the future is download.

yeah i guess thas a possibility. But remember, alot of countrys, like australia where im from, have abysmal internet transfer rates and usage per $. I dont think download we be it all. But I do think that it will play a MUCH larger role

Well, have fun downloading your 30 GB games.

No problem here, I use DSL with 16mbit/s now and will get VDSL 50mbit/s by the end of the year.
But i do understand the problem that rural areas or some countries don't have fast broadband internet access.

Probably we will also see other sales strategies in a few years.

im lucky to get 1mb per second:)

That depends on the purpose:

For PC's: Not necessary. Who needs 50GB+ disc media when Flash/SD/drives cards are rapidly surpassing/already passed BluRay in all aspects: storage, price and read spead.

For films: That really depends. The latest marketshare figures aren't very hopefull for BluRay. In Holland it was 2.75% revenue and 1.1% units sales of films over 2008. With the economic crisis I think it's over with BluRay.

For gaming: Very big chance imo. Next generation games will easily surpass the capacity of DVD. PS3 proves that it's a good game media. If the reading speeds increase it's basically ideal, since it's proven technology that's fit for purpose.

Blu-ray is interesting for the movies format.

IMO it is still waaaayyy overkill for gaming. An average game is between 4-8 gigas, so the DVD format is still enough, no matter what people say...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

I'd say as soon as it become affordable. Why wouldn't you want a bluray drive? It's backward compatible with DVDs and CDs and you can play bluray movies...

Would be stupid not to have one if it's affordable.

Sony (of course) started to put it in it's computers already, so does Dell (for 200€ now...), so will Apple (from what I've heard).

I think it will soon become the standard, or at least widely available.

They will know Helgan belongs to Helghasts

I think blu ray drives will be standard in PCs and laptops within 2 years or so. But as a video playing format I don't blu ray will ever replace DVDs
