Forums - Sony - David Jaffe on Media Bias...

Looks to me a very common mentality amongst US media.

Of course the fact remains that the PS3 outperformed the 360 considerably taking equal timeframes, despite many extra months or even years of extra headstart (and more holiday seasons) taking such a measure. And despite having been sold at a much higher entry level pricing over this period and Microsoft shooting off its most anticipated games much earlier than Sony did.

The PS3 attracted mostly adult males, the Wii attracted mostly young preteen kids as well as many casual female gamers, the 360 mostly attracted young boys. Regarding me as an adult male, Sony's decisions resulted into a more relevant and solid userbase. Yes, highly specced and multi-featured the PS3 is not as much a cheap toy for kids, but I am personally very glad the PS3 is not specced like a Wii. What would the market have gained in terms of choice if there were 2 or 3 Wii-like products? There's still the PS2, which is still a nice Wii competitor (until a slimline PS3 considerably drops in price).

IMO that's a very valid perspective the US media seems to ignore at all cost. We also saw many very biased coverage of the Blu-Ray vs HD DVD conflict (HD DVD was technically inferior in every sense as well as lacking industry support in comparison to the support there was for Blu-Ray), IMO treat the bulk of US media coverage similar to this.

While the average media journalist in America is an adult male, your argument makes perfect sense!

Good stuff Mike! Keep it up dude.

If you are talking about the console demographics, that was just me basing my comment on a recent Nielsen study. At least for me their findings aren't really that surprising.

America's entertainment software industry creates a wide array of computer and video games to meet the demands and tastes of audiences as diverse as our nation's population. Today's gamers include millions of Americans of all ages and backgrounds.  In fact, almost two-thirds of all American households play games. This vast audience is fueling the growth of this multi-billion dollar industry and bringing jobs to communities across the nation.  Below is a list of the top 10 entertainment software industry facts:

  1. U.S. computer and video game software sales grew six percent in 2007 to $9.5 billion – more than tripling industry software sales since 1996.
  2. Sixty-five percent of American households play computer or video games.
  3. The average game player is 35 years old and has been playing games for 13 years.
  4. The average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 40 years old.
  5. Forty percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (33 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent).
  6. In 2008, 26 percent of Americans over the age of 50 played video games, an increase from nine percent in 1999.
  7. Thirty-six percent of heads of households play games on a wireless device, such as a cell phone or PDA, up from 20 percent in 2002.
  8. Eighty-five percent of all games sold in 2007 were rated "E" for Everyone, "T" for Teen, or "E10+" for Everyone 10+.  For more information on game ratings, please see www.esrb.org.
  9. Ninety-four percent of game players under the age of 18 report that their parents are present when they purchase or rent games.
  10. Sixty-three percent of parents believe games are a positive part of their children’s lives.

@ Squilliam

I didn't say gaming is just for kids, I just said the Wii is relatively especially popular amongst young kids. That's not a surprise as according to Nintendo's own studies in the past, the GameCube userbase was almost entirely dominated by kids.

One caution though when talking about averages, having 3 nine years olds as your userbase and one 90 year old grandpa as your userbase, still means the userbase is dominated by preteens despite the average age may be 30. For example in this case crafting games targeted at 30 year olds would result in failure.

I am sure there are many adult gamers, for example potentially also gaming on PCs. But from what I have seen the Wii does especially well with kids (and females of all ages, the latter more so than I anticipated) and the 360 does well amongst young teen males. Actually most 360s I saw being bought here were for 10-12 year old boys when the console only was 119-149 Euro around here including taxes over the holiday season. As for entry pricing that's pretty cheap, for many cheap enough to buy as a kid's birthday present, for sinterklaas celebrations or for Christmas.

If you don't like the heat...

Jaffe will stay out of the kitchen on this one. For the record, good journalism is built around answering tough questions, biased or not. I think the questions are pointed and should be answered by someone. It's obvious Sony isn't taking any accountability on the PS3's issues at the moment, so someone might as well.

In fact, these are the question that Sony Fanboys should have answered so they can have better arguments than the current dribble that is usually put forth.

And while they are at it, they should ask Microsoft why they didn't spend the 5 cents per console to keep disks from being scratched, why did they rush out a cosole with so many technical problems such as the RROD and why does it sound like a hoover vacume cleaner. And while they are at it, they should ask them how a system at such a higher price point is at the same point it was at a year ago while releasing a year later. I don't think they will though. :P

You're damned right they should ask these questions. No one is immune.
