Forums - Microsoft - IGN Star Ocean: The Last Hope Review 8.0

I dont see the point in arguing which console jRPG has higher metascore right now. None of them has scored 90+ in average anyway.

Besides, I've noticed that when it comes to HD jRPGs - high review scores dont help them sell at all.

So Valkyria Chronicles remains the highest rated JRPG on HD consoles ! GO VC !!!

As for Star Ocean review it quite confirms the impression I've got form the videos : except from the battle system, there is little incetive to play the game.

I love VC but its not officially the highest rated JRPG because Tales of Vesperia did not come out in EU yet and both Metacritic and Gamerankings add review scores from reviewers in both EU and America.TOV could get a higher score or the the current score it has know could go down.

Assuming that the EU release lets ToV go from 36 reviews it has now to the 55 reviews that VC has now having released in all regions ToV would have to average 98% on the 19 reviews that came in for it to go from the 81 it is at currently to the 87 that VC is at.  Just ain't happening dude.

These calculations ignore Meta's weighting system, but it gives you an idea of just how unlikely it is that ToV will pass VC with more reviews coming in.

TOV just got 2 reviews. One was from GIN and they gave it a 5/5 and another was from NTSC and they gave it a 9/10.Im not saying its going to pass VC, i'm just said the EU reviews could boast TOV score higher or could lower it.I'm just saying that you sould not count TOV out because there is always a chance.Does not matter to me thought because both games are awesome.

so this game got 7.5 for graphics ???
Arent the pics gorgeous or what ? weird (a 7.5 would be justified if the reviewer said anything about the 500P resolution in the battle and the lack of AA, but he didnt say a word about those issues)

the review was good, but i was expecting an 8.5 or 9 for this game,
so, 7 from Game informer, 8 from IGN,, 1up and gamespot are next !!!!

Currently Playing: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3), White Knight Chronicles (PS3), PES 2010 (PS3), Killzone 2 (PS3)

Games to Finish: Silent hill Homecoming (PS3), Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), Oblivion (PS3)

Ooh, nice score. As expected, not as good as Vesperia(duh) but still a gewd!

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

I hope that an eventual PS3 version includes the Japanese voices.

Anyway, it's a nice score and I think that the one's who loved SO3 will also love this one.

Hmm. I don't think it's a bad score. To me it seems the biggest problem is the localization which brought the score down. I guess if you can get past that there's no problem.

Companies need to be able to localize JRPGs right >_< How many companies can do that? Atlus? And Nippon Ichi?

I wonder what the first 90%+ traditional RPG will be. FF XIII? But I wish more RPGs in general get 90s (at least VC is 90%+).

Square-Enix are way more capable of localizing games than what IU, TLR, and apparently SO4 might indicate to some gamers.  Look at FFXII for a recent example.  Even if you thought FFXII's story was relatively weak, you can't deny that FFXII had a great localization along with a well-written script.  Also, Nintendo are very capable of localizing JRPGs when they actually do it.  Earthbound and the Mario RPGs have great localizations and well written scripts.  As you said, Atlus really know how to localize a JRPG.  Persona 4 sets a high standard when it comes to localization.  Nippon Ichi?  Not so much.  Their localizations tend to be terrible with the exception of anything named Disgaea.  Ar Tonelico II suffers from typos and "random" dialogue or so I've heard.

@Soriku: VC is not 90%+... SE should hire better voice actors and translators for its non-FF/KH/DQ games. Reviewers should stop complaining about the time needed to explore dungeons fully. 1-2 hours to fully explore a dungeon in JRPGs is a norm and if you die, well, you were careless or had a bad strategy.

And Baten Kaitos Origins (for Nintendo) :D Good script, and lots of cursing ("Go to hell, you son of a bitch!" - best line in the game).

What about the voice acting...
