Forums - Nintendo - Why did the Gamecube fail???

I cannot see how it's legitiamately conclusive that SONY was to blame.

Also, I remember that the "kiddy" stigma started to surface back during the SNES and Genesis days when comparing titles such as the multi-platform Mortal Kombat.  And by the way, I like "kiddy" games as long as it's a specific game I'm looking for, and it's quality.

Edited it down so its not taking up so much space =) Now, Sony was doing everything in their power to push the whole "kiddie" thing to new levels, trying to lure more of the high schoolers and 20-somethings to the Playstation brand. It was pretty obvious and Sony wasn't trying to hide the fact. Had the PS3 been more successful and less of a heartache for Sony, I'm sure they would have spent more time campaigning this point against the Wii as well.

Yes, I do remember the issue of blood removal on the SNES and censorship arguments, etc, you might be right there, but it was isolated to one specific game, not the entire console's library (of course back then M rated games were unheard of).

No support for DVD, Bad third party support (especially later) and I think people just wanted to stick with ps2 at the time. Oh, and the controller was a fugly monstrosity.

I thought it was k though.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... The Gamecube was launched at a time when the PS2 was already the console to own due to its much larger library of games. It launched about 18 months earlier after all. The Gamecube didn't offer a different gaming experience than the PS2, so most people opted for the system with the most games.

The main difference between the PS2 and GC was that the GC had Nintendo games. That and a few third party exclusives, but this was easily outweighed by the sheer number of games that the PS2 got.

You are back? Yaay! Does that meaning you will be getting a thrashing from moi in the GP on Friday?

Too awesome for this world

The controller was infact too good for most people to cope with, they just couldn't handle the fact that whatever they achieved in life, they would never be as awesome as the GC controller

I still have an "old" issue of EGM which reported that 50% of PSOne users were 18 years and older (which I was one of - let me go back and look this up).  That was an example of the media, and NOT SONY doing this.  I also remember a gaming website (not SONY) showing a picture of a teletubby holding a mock up GC before its release, pushing the "kiddy" stigma.  And Mortal Kombat was only one game.  Genesis exclusives such as the Golden Axe series, Space Harrier, and Streets of Rage were more "mature" than what can be found on the SNES.  Was SONY totally innocent, no.  But "Sony was doing everything in their power...", keep pushing the hate, buddy.  But like you said, "Problem is, teenagers are stubborn creatures that love to be negative."  And such negativity can lead to clouded judgment.  Were you a teen in those days?  Either way, please be careful.

Because Gamecube followed a strategy that all the hardcore kids wish Wii would follow.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

You are right the media definitely helped with their biased views throughout, but even the interviews from sony reps kept pushing the "fact" that Nintendo was designed for little kids, and this is the point I'm making. They spewed a LOT of the "kiddie" stuff not only to the media but other members within the industry. Trust me, they laid it on good. No hate, just stating how it was. Their press releases were more detrimental to the "kiddie" image of Nintendo than you're giving credit for.

Also, no I've not been a teen since 1996, less than a year since the PS1 launch, but have seen enough disgraceful things in the last gen (PS2/XB/GC) era from otherwise respectable people in the industry.

On topic of the Genesis games, I cant see how any of those games were considered mature over other games. Ive played them all, and they were good games, but I cant see how they stand out any differently from games like Double Dragon or Life Force. I think MK was alone in being a "mature" game due only to the blood thing. Really pushed the issue.

Your comment and Viper1's comment(on the first pg) Pretty much sums it up. To be it was like Nintendo was going through a transition. *shrugs*

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

Curious about popular opinion on this issue, i punched "Why the GameCube failed" into Google, and the first hit was, strangely enough, a fairly rational critique of what went wrong on the software and marketing sides of things. A blog post from January 2007

It's really a well-written article. Would that bloggers could write such well-founded articles about the Wii
