Forums - Nintendo - Could On Rail shooters become the next big thing?

I don't think they'll become the 'next big thing' but certainly Wii has revived several genre's - party games, mini-games, Point & Click adventures & Onrail shooters (did I miss any?) and introduced some news ones like true tilt games and fitness games.

Of those I think only fitness games have room for explosive growth to truly be 'the next big thing'

On-Rails shooters are the perfect "hardcore bridge title."

Yup. Although, there are many more potential bridges that have still gone unexplored. I'd like to see third parties like EA take up some of that role instead of just Nintendo and to a lesser extent Sega.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Actually Gamerace, the fitness genres been around for a while, just that Ninty took the idea to *Mad tv voice* Ah hole nada leval!!!"

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

Well EA have their foot in the 'fitness game' door as well with EA Sports Active. Also yeah on rails shooters could be a good bridge genre depending on the subject matter.

Sidenote: My Fitness Coach for example for on the previous genre. The PS brought alot of what the Wii is doing now to the table, and even set the plates.

...It's the reason why I will NEVER understand how Sony lost sight of what MADE the PS1/PS2 so quickly...Same why Nintendo did too with the N64. =/

I'm glad to see a resurgence in light-gun style games.

That said, it definitely seems like a new bandwagon. I wonder if everyone will get sick of them if too many rail-shooters are published.

Actually, I'm already kind of sick of them. I'm going to pick up HotD: Overkill at some point, and then that's it for me.

For the love of God i hope not! A video game that plays itself is no bueno.

So, how far have you gotten into any of the games without doing anything??

@topic

No, I don't think they'll be the next big thing, however, it does look like they will make a nice comeback on home consoles. Back in the good old arcade days you could go out and play one of these for hours. I couldn't tell you how many $100's of dollars I spent on Time Crisis II. At one point I got good enough to beat the game with 1 credit

i kinda sorda if/ish maybie agree w/ Snow. I just dont have as much fun in games where you dont have full controll of the protagonist.... i will say that time crysis 1 and 2 were unbelivably amazing... BUT there are so many FPS' now that are just as fun but you can also controll the protagonist which gives you the opprotunities to explore you surroundings and appretiate the work that the dev's put into the enviroments and everything else.

Balance Board support for ducking in a new Time Crisis would be sweet. It seems the Wii has the first decent selling rail shooter since at least the DC. Still I am getting a pretty oversize collection of them.

XBL: WiiVault Wii: PM me  PSN: WiiVault

PC: AMD Athlon II Quadcore 635 (OC to 4.0ghz) , ATI Radeon 5770 1GB (x2)

MacBook Pro C2D 2.8ghz, 9600m GT 512 iMac: C2D 2.0, X2600XT 256

Probably nothing like the next big thing, but they're definitely making a limited comeback. Good news to me, as I really enjoy the genre. ^^

to be honest, i think that they would only sell well on the wii. it has the perfect controller obviously. if they were on the other consoles, it would be much more difficult to play the game
