I'm listening to a Killzone 2 podcast, and I agree with them that the marketing in Sony is horrible. There's 10 days left before KZ2 launches, and so far we got a 10 second trailer in the UK, and a pretty funny, but pretty much unnoticed viral campaign with the valentine's day thing.
Like the podcast said, Sony can't depend on word of mouth between fanboys/hardcore gamers, and pretend they're in the PS2 era where even a fraction of that userbase is huge. Remember, most of you, if not all of you guys on this forum are the minority. The kids I know who have PS3s have 3 games, a sports game, a popular shooter (COD), and one more block buster hit.
The reason why GTA IV, Halo 3, and GeoW 2 were huge hits are largely a part to the publicity those games got. I think that Jack Thompson, and all the news outlets did a HUGE favor for GTA IV, because they were practically advertising the game.
I'm a PS3 fan, because I absolutely despise Microsoft's treatment of its fans with RROD, scratched disk controversy, their milking out of money with add on, and IMHO overhyped games.
But you know what overhyped games sell well, primest example being GTA IV (10.0 from IGN? I've lost the respect I gained for them after their Assassin's Creed review).
They can't rely on Sony fanboys to hype the game. Casual gamers don't go to websites like VGChartz, or watch G4. I would of rather have them get controversy than have absolutely no publicity.
============================
Killzone 2 will NOT be a console seller. Despite the stronger lineup PS3 has this year against Microsoft, few of its games can actually attract a potential buyer alone (Having lost FFXIII to the US and EU, and GT5 being the exception due 2010).
What Killzone 2 CAN do is get attention on the PS3, and publicity to it for the masses, to NON-PS3 owners. Killzone needs to be a big bang, that will allow lesser known games like Infamous get attention, and allow a consistent stream of hype. We need to go from game to game, quarter to quarter with hype, and so people will actually look at the PS3 and say "Wow, look at the games they have".
And so far, Sony is not starting out well if this is all they have to offer.
A great product and great games won't sell if nobody knows about it.
