mgs 3 and 4 are THE best!!

I think the best one is Metal Gear Solid 4. I think the one I liked the least was Metal Gear Solid 2. I haven't played much of the game but I don't really enjoy the beginning of the game.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY

If i were to make a chart just for the fun of it, it would be 4>3>2>1.

But in all honesty, every MGS game is a masterpiece in it's own way. 1 was great because it was the first, it was fresh, humorous and intelligent, 2 was incredibly thought provoking and 3 was extremely poignant.

Now in my math book: (1+ 2 +3) x 5 = 4.

MGS4 is just everything a MGS game ever was and more. It is elaborate, thought provoking, allegorical and heart breaking and it has that "sense" of nostalgie and definitive closure few stories ever had. It is like The return of the Jedi, only 100 times better. I think it'll be a while 'till a story will again create such contexts and reach such heights as the Volta incident, REX vs RAY, the proposal scene (one of my favourites in the entire series), the final battle or the debriefing.
I really find it hard to believe that the writers didn't have the story planned out from the beginning, as everything is so expertly wrought in MGS4, making the entire MGS saga an incredibly elaborated and masterfully managed long con.

I think the overall problem is that the first three games didn't have to be responsible in their story-telling, leaving MGS4 to clean up the pieces. Think of it like how the Presidents keep thinking of short term solutions to long term problems and eventually someone will have to come along and finally right them for good instead of pushing them under the rug. Then again, MGS4 did just explain away everything with "nanomachines are responsible" so maybe it was yet another solution to brush the problems under the rug for Kojima. I'm pretty sure he had absolutely no idea where the story was going after MGS1 and it shows.

You're probably right.  Still, a lot of things in part four made me cringe.  Akiba, the wedding, the "escort mission", Drebin and his monolgues about the Beauty and Beasts........I could go on.

I'm replaying the whole series.  I'm taking my time with them too.  What impresses me about the first three is the amount of content.  Codec conversations and easter eggs out the ass!  Psycho Mantis told me I was playing "Super Mario Sunshine".  Naomi gave me a massage with the controller.  Meryl freaked out because I was staring at her boobs.  Part two had more variety than any other game in the series:  Sniping, defusing bombs, swimming, escorting, running around naked.  Ice cubes melted if you looked at them long enough.  There was a woman in the hostage room who'd open her legs when I look away, and closed them when I tried to peak at her underwear!  The more you look, the more you'd find.  MGS 3 actually packs more easter eggs than part 2.  The story is amazing and heartfelt, to boot.

I guess the other three set the bar too high.  MGS4 has a "deja vu" motorcycle scene, a "deja vu" tracking scene, a surprise (and impressive) Gear on Gear scene, and a poorly done fighting game.  I've enjoyed cinematics since the days of Ninja Gaiden.  I actually bought games like Astyanax and Xenogears because of their lenthy cinematics.  A lot of MGS4 was cinematics.....but when the cinematic is just two people having a conversation for twenty minutes......I tend to want more.  The "Drebin points" system and the fatigue system (let' watch Snake take a nap to regain his stamina!) actually made the game LESS FUN than it should have been.  The bosses, like someone else said, were let downs too.  They beat MGS2's rougues, but didn't stack up to parts 1 and 3.

I'm being too hard on MGS4.  I did love the game.  It's just that I love the others more. Sorry.

I agree with all those points. Everything in MGS4 was disappointing, except for the graphics. First of all, it's too linear. Press start and the map will tell you where to go. Why? Also each act was located in a different place. Double why? The story is stupid. Nanomachines is pretty much the answer to everything: why Vamp is the way he is, why Naomi hasn't died, etc. Johnny marrying Meryl? Get the hell out of here. The drama is full of lulz like Otacon crying over a one night stand.

The bosses are uninteresting. They had no character. Seriously, you fought them without even knowing anything about them, but after you kill them, Drebin will call you and tell you their life story. Who cares? They're dead. The boss fights felt more of the same, but I did like the final boss and the Metal Gear one. Talking about Drebin, his Drebin points system is the worst feature in the game. It doesn't motivate you to conserve your ammo. Don't have any ammo during a boss fight? No worries, just purchase some. Also those reinforcements are the same people you would find in the battleground. In Metal Gear Solid 2, the reinforcements would wear body armor, bring shields and throw some flash grenade.

I noticed Metal Gear Solid 4 lacked "missions." In MGS3, Snake had to put the C4 near the Shagohod's gas tank or something. MGS2, defussing bombs from Fatman and escorting Emma to Hal. MGS1, taking that PAL card to a hot location and cold location. Metal Gear Solid 4 lacked that. The cutscenes did everything for you, and don't you say that following the following the member in Act 3 because that was terrible. If you remove the cutscenes, you get about 4 hours of gameplay.

The codecs and little secrets in Metal Gear Solid 4 were very disappointing. Only two people to talk to? Come on. Metal Gear Solid 1 has an amazing cast in the codec. Metal Gear Solid 2 had some funny codec moments like after punching a few hostages or getting pissed on. Also the game had some nice little secrets in the codecs like finding out about Vamp. Collecting dog tags is fun, but some were a bitch. MGS3 is the same. Great cast and some funny codec moments like Paramedic talking about vampires or Snake talking about eating animals. There's also a nice little secret about the parents of Ocelot. Let's not forget finding those green frogs to unlock stuff.

Talking about MGS3, that reminds me: Why did you bring the cast from MGS3 to MGS4? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, NO!!!!! They were out of character in MGS4!!

For me, it's not even close. MGS wins big time.

1. MGS (fresh, interesting gameplay, some pretty kick ass bosses, a story that didn't make me want to scream... mostly)
2. MGS4 (the controls put it over the top, too bad they weren't used in MGS2 when they would have been innovative)
3. MGS3 (better story than 4 but the controls ruined it for me)

1948. MGS2. I hate this game.
