I disagree about Drebin's monolouging on the b&b though. I enjoyed those conversations, they were all so amazingly screwed up finding out why these women were like they were and it solved a huge problem from past games in the series, Boss monolouging. Seriously, who has a 20 minute monolouge before they shoot you in the head? I did like that they presented most of the story in cutscenes too. I'd rather see the game play out then listening to it unfold half the game. It was bad enough having to do nothing but listen to half the game instead of playing it, at least now I get to watch too and its all completely skippable. These were Kojima's solutions to problems gamers were complaining about and I loved the way he solved them. Now if only he hadn't put Akiba and all those awful scenes in the game....

My problem with the Drebin conversations is that they made every girl seemingly the same character. Every girl is a psych ward nutcase with a fucked up situation happening to them in wartime when they were children. Rinse and repeat for each girl. It was redundant. Sure they were fucked up stories, but they never gave any emotional pull to the fights because the girls were already defeated when you got their backstory. You have no attachment to any of them during the fights. At the very least, maybe Drebin should have contacted you about them beforehand. Still, it would have been nice to have enemies that were individuals and not mindless zombies like the Beauties were. Even though the battle with Vamp was far too straight forward, simple and dissappointing, he had far more personality than all four Beauties rolled up into one.
To exemplify the point, let me point out that I felt the only Beauty that was entertaining was the first, because she was based on a character from MGS you never come in contact with for the most part, Decoy Octopus. Every other girl was a shoddy and hollowed out version of a much more interesting incarnation from the original. Where were the exceptional mindgames Sniper Wolf played on you using Meryl as bait? Where were the warrior to warrior conversations you would have with Vulcan Raven where you knew the two characters held eachother's utmost respect? Preying Mantis is more or less just as good as Psycho Mantis, but only because they copied the boss fight far too well. None of it felt original at all, and that took away from anyone familiar with the tactics, because we already knew what to do and didn't fall for it again.
As far as the Codecs, they are also skippable, or can be fast forwarded through, so that's not really a valid argument. Plus they gave you aspects of the story that the cutscenes could not duplicate. They were like side quests that gave you insight into the personalities of other characters and also of Snake's character. It showed him as a character and not simply a lumbering, dying, silent corpse of a man he was in MGS4. Snake was no longer witty, humorous, questioning the mission constantly or building a relationship over Codec because of his loneliness because in MGS4 he no longer had the avenues to be a character. I already mentioned many of the things the Codecs offered that were not brought forth through cutscenes, and it's a feature I do miss, because it cuts down on the personality of the series. Everyone was just far too serious this time around.
Ill say 3 is the best because of the ties between Big Boss (Naked Snake) and The Joy.
Then again 4 due to the return of Liquid and Solid Snakes brotherly feuds.
I'll probably go with 4 because of the Act 4 (bringing back memories) and the ending. The ending had me pumped and determined to fight like i did in MGS1. Also Snake tricking me into thinking he did ??? in the ending CS.
By Far MGS3 is the best because of the story, boss battles, survival mechanics, and what you have to do at the end is mind blowing.
MGS1
