There was so much epicness between Sephiroth that the story would have been nowhere near as good if it was changed. To "replace" him would have destroyed the story. Having someone else destroy Sephy would have also defeated the entire purpose of him being the main character. That argument could potentially be placed in any game. Although it would be a nice twist to have a supporting character do the final deed instead, it would not always work better.

Cloud facing off against his life long hero, his idol, his mentor. The man that betrayed him in the worst way possible.

Cloud was seen as weak by Hojo, unworthy of being a proper Sephiroth clone. Funny how a "Failed Experiment" was the only one that could defeat him.

Sephiroth was sure that no meager human could ever defeat him, expecially anyone as lowly as Cloud. he was definitely surprised when Cloud shoved a foot wide sword in his back.

Cloud is imbued with Jenova Cells, "mothers memetic legacy". This means that Sephiroth inadvertently lives within Cloud dorment. They are apart of each other. As long as Cloud lives, so does Sephiroth.

Sephiroth stole everything that he ever felt dear too. His life, his home, his family, his love.

@g-value: I know he did, I'm just saying, Vincent is cooler.
@emilie: That would've ruled. I know Vincent is a supporting optional character, but he just plays such a big part, he deserved at least a spot in the ending.
and @forevercloud: Allright already! You win! Cloud had some revenge thing with Sephiroth, and all that. It bothers me that Sephiroth meant so much to Cloud and Cloud was just some random dude to Sephiroth (as he controled a lot of other people through Jenova cells), but if it means that much to you, I give up! Cloud wins, OK?! All hail the spike-haired-falic-symbol-wielding SOLDIER.

I don't think Vincent would fit so good as a main lead like Cloud was
