EDIT: Zela II is technically an rpg.

Pacman taught people to run around in dark rooms munching on pills while listening to repettive techno music and for that I somewhat idolise him.

Black Knight from "Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance". No other villain from an RPG I played comes even close. The first time Ike is alone with him, I was shaking... "Damn!! I didn't save the game. I'm not prepared. This dude is like a god and I'm not even close." Wow!! That encounter was epic for me, even though... well... whoever played the game knows...

But I also didn't play FF6 or FF7. I heard great things about Kefka and Sephiroth.
